For our neighbors Acknowledgments We would like to thank, above all, our co-workers and neighbors at Community Technology and the Institute for Local Self-Reli- ance for generating many ofthe ideas, and not a little ofthe data, that have gone into this book. Ifit weren't for the residents ofthe Adams Morgan community growing vegetables on their roofs, mapping out the neighborhood for urban food production, setting up cooperative businesses, talking about small-scale technology, building solar cookers, starting neighborhood assemblies, hosting block parties, having fun, we might never have believed in the practicability ofneighborhood power. Thanks to Therese Hess for doing a superbjob ofediting a messy manuscript, and to Mary Jo Sutherland, for doing an equally superbjob ofurging it on to completion as the beautiful summer months beckoned. A special thanks to Gil Friend and Neil Seldman. Many long hours of dialogue with them helped to refine vague and crude ideas. Needless to say, the authors alone are responsible for the statements in this book. It's up to other neighborhoods and small cities around the country to add their own chapters to the growing literature of local efforts at self-reliance and independ- ence.
