I know many of you are probably like us and your pregnant cows are just waiting or not for the cooler days. Our calving season is well underway and you can always bet these warmer temps will make those calves come a bit early. The Association recently hosted our annual field day at the Upper Piedmont Research Station in Reidsville, NC. I wanted to thank Joe French and Joe Hampton for all their help in making the event a success. Also thank you to Chris Jeffcoat, Neil Bowman, Mark Bray, Dr. Richard Kirkman and Dr. Harrison Dudley for the excellent educational programs. This year’s field day was held at the Upper Piedmont Research Station in Reidsville, NC. A very familiar locations to our members, since it serves as the host location for our annual Spring Fever Sale each May. But during the field day we saw many of the other cattle, research and farming enterprises that make up the station. The morning kicked John Barnes, Chris Jeffcoat, Dr. Harrison Dudley and Joe off with welcoming remarks from our field day chairman Hampton found time for a serious discussion during the Joe Hampton. Then American Angus Association regional field day manager Chris Jeffcoat gave us a look into the new Angus Link program from American Angus. Chris explained the concept of the program was to serve as a tool for com- mercial cow-calf producers to communicate the genetic performance potential of their feeder calves to buyers thus making them more marketable and reliable. The program will be officially launched in early September and Chris en- couraged everyone to follow the progress of the program on its website www.AngusLink.com. Using weaned calves from the research station farm, Neil and Mark were also able to dis- cuss what buyer look for in a “quality” feeder calf. They dis- cussed grading practices, visual appraisal and what type of questions they get from buyers when putting togeth- er loads of calves for the feed yard. Several calves were brought out for the group to evaluate and everyone went home with a better understanding of what buyers want in the calves they purchase.
