It is a scented plant attaining a height of about 30- 60 cm when mature. The leaves have a strong aromatic scent. It is available worldwide and is a native of Africa, India and Asia. Basil is cultivated and also grows in the wild. It has been used in traditional medicines for ages. Basil oil is used in aromatherapy for stress, migraine, cold and hay fever. Basil tea is good for digestion, constipation, and diarrhoea. Externally, they have been applied for the treatment of acne, insect stings, and skin infections. 4 It has been used as a general detoxifier, to lower blood pressure, lower blood sugar levels and cholesterol. Ocimum basilicum (sweet basil) has been reported to exhibit antibacterial activities against a wide range of gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. It also has antifungal, anticancer, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities. The leaves have been traditionally used to cure ulcers and infections of the mouth. Holy Basil is good for boosting up the immune system. It protects from nearly all sorts of infections from viruses, bacteria, fungi and protozoa. O. sanctum has been reported to possess very good anti diabetic properties. Method 1 A hip-bath is used in this method. A bath is the complete or partial immersion of the body in water. Baths have a relaxing effect on the body. Use 60-90g of fresh basil leaves and flowers per liter of water. Put the plant materials into a glass or ceramic container that is heat resistant. 5 Boil water in a kettle. Remove the kettle from stove and pour enough boiled water over the plant materials. Cover the container and wait for 15-20minutes for dissolution of the active constituents into the water. Filter through a strainer to separate the basil leaves from the water. Allow the filtered liquid to cool and become warm to the point at which you can conveniently insert your hands into the water and keep it there without being hurt. Pour the warm liquid preparation into a bath or wide wash-bowl. 6 The prepared liquid herbal material is poured into the bath or suitable basin to reach the hips but should be kept under the navel. There is a need to sit in the bath or wash-bowl containing the prepared plant material. This enables the plant material in the bath to make contact directly with the skin and external genital organs. Sit in the bath for 10 -15 minutes. 7
