WITHDRAWN 1 ■* 'O' ABOUT THE AUTHORS BARRY BARNES has lectured in the sociology of science at the Science Studies Unit, Edinburgh University since 1968, having been trained in the natural sciences at Cambridge Univer sity and in sociology at Essex Uni¬ versity. His main interest is in the soci¬ ology of knowledge and culture, and, for a number of years, has been study¬ ing natural science as a typical form of culture, amenable to the normal methods of study of sociology and an¬ thropology. He edited the Peguin anthology of the Sociology of Science (1972). Among his publications are books on Scientific Knowledge and Sociological Theory (Routledge and Kegan Paul, 1974) and Interests and the Growth of Knowledge (Routledge and Kegan Paul, 1977). STEVEN SHAPIN is Lecuter in the History of Science at the Science Studies Unit, Edinburg University. He was trained in biology and genetics at Reed College, Oregon, and the Uni¬ versity of Wisconsin, and received a Ph.D. in the history and sociology of science at the University of Pennsyl¬ vania in 1971. He has published papers on the social history of British science in the 18th and 19th centuries, and has been especially interested in Scottish science and sociological approaches to scientific knowledge.
