There's something very special about feeling connected to nature. Whether you're stopping to admire a beautiful flower in your local park, gazing up at the clouds dancing through the sky or listening to the gentle crash of waves by the coast, embracing the natural environment around us just feels good. Good for our soul, good for our mind - and good for our health too. Time after time, research has proven that our outside environment is a key antidote for stress, and studies also suggest it can strengthen our immune system, lower blood pressure and much more. It’s certainly a miracle drug if there ever was one. And, that’s why this issue we're looking at ways to rewild your body and soul and get closer to nature. Starting on page 53, our special covers many different ways to do this — with foraging tips, a grounding meditation and advice on how to make your own skincare from nature's precious bounty. Our very own Laura Coppock also spends a night under the stars in an effort to experience the benefits of ‘dark nature’ and nocturnal adventuring. Find out how she got on on page 96. Elsewhere this issue we've got a whole host of brilliant features covering topics including nutrition, beauty and mental wellbeing. And don’t miss our deep dive into the idea of women’s circles over on page 16. Through encouraging reflection, connection and a sense of peace, this ancient practice is definitely one to bring into the modern day. If you've been involved in a women's circle, we'd love to hear from you — please get in touch and share your story. It’s a cardiotonic (meaning it improves blood flow around the body) and it supports the heart and circulatory system, aiding conditions such as high blood pressure, angina, arteriosclerosis, palpitations and even heartbreak. Hawthorn stimulates the heart and is widely used in many cultures. You can collect it via the flowering tops and by picking its berries. There are few side effects to hawthorn, but professional guidance should be sought before taking it. READ THE LABEL: ESSENTIAL OILS Essential oils can help us destress, sleep better and even soothe anxiety, but with so many on the market, how can we know we're buying a genuine product? “Unfortunately, essential oils are often made by unethical distillers and sellers, making them inferior,” says Sarah Rueger, clinical aromatherapist and founder of skincare brand Amaranthine. “Lavender is a common example, so the best way of ensuring purity is to buy from a reputable supplier. They will state the common name, botanical name, the source, batch number and use-by date, and issue a certificate of purity if requested. If you can find a reputable supplier that sells organic essential oils, even better. Companies dedicated to organic standards are committed to providing high-quality oils that are produced by environmentally-friendly and sustainable farming practices.” PLANT PROFILE: ROSE GERANIUM Picture an English summertime and a rose garden will probably spring to mind. However, rose geranium is a little different to your standard English rose. While its leaves may smell like our resident roses, it actually originates from Africa. The plant's pink flowers are thought to have medicinal properties, ranging from anti-ageing to anti-inflammatory, and while more research is needed to verify these claims, rose geranium oil can make a great addition to your relaxation routine. Add a few drops to your bath alongside a carrier oil to reap its benefits. Important safety note: never ingest plant essential oils or apply to the skin undiluted. NATURAL FACT If you're a keen gardener, hayfever can stop you spending time in the fresh air. To combat pesky pollen, try wetting down grass before gardening to prevent pollen spores. Grass is the most common cause of hayfever as its pollen scatters in the wind, so one of the best ways to beat the symptoms is by mowing your lawn regularly to prevent the grass from flowering. Edging your garden area with stones will help to keep allergens at bay, too. Another tip to help limit your pollen exposure is to shower and change your clothes when you get indoors after gardening. To relieve hayfever-induced itchy eyes, try A Vogel Pollinosan Eye Drops (£12.99, avogel. Or co.uk) which contains hyaluronic acid and chamomile. 00% of UK consumers who bought beauty products during the past 12 months looked out for products made with natural ingredients. *Research by soilassociation.org naturalhealthwoman.com JUNE IS THE MONTH TO... WEAVE IN A WELLBEING RITUAL Sometimes wellbeing is more than just a feeling; it’s making a conscious effort to do something that nourishes your mind, body and soul. Wellbeing rituals can be as simple as lighting acandle and watching the wick burn as you decompress after along day at work. Or it could be setting time aside to make a nourishing meal for yourself. These micro-actions, however small they may seem, carry a lot of weight. Not only are they a lesson in self-compassion, but they also teach you the value of slowing down and taking a moment for yourself. naturalhealthwoman.com
