History and Management of the National Poultry Improvement Plan The National Poultry Improvement Plan became operational July 1, 1935, and the National Turkey Improvement Plan was activated on September25, 1943, with the approval ofthe Secretary ofAgriculture. On December 3, 1971 the two Plans were , combined underonetitle, 'The National Poultry Improvement Plan," with separate provisions applicable tothe different types of poultry. The Plan is implemented by State authorities in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) in administering regulations forthe improvement of poultry, poultry products, and hatcheries. Authorityforthe administration ofthe Plan is now contained in the Department ofAgriculture Organic Act of 1944, as amended (7 U.S.C. 429). Provisions ofthe Plan are changed from time totime to conform with the development of the industry and with new information as it becomes available. These changes are based on recommendations made at the biennial national Plan conferences by official delegates representing participating breeders, hatcheries, and flock owners from all cooperating States. Current provisions of the Plan are contained in a publication entitled 'The National Poultry Improvement Plan and Auxiliary Provisions." This publication (APHIS 91-55-063) is available from Official State Agencies or on request to the National Poultry Improvement Plan, USDA, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), Veterinary Services, 1498 Klondike Road, Suite 101, Conyers, GA 30094. Forexample, the approval numberforthe first hatchery listed under Alabama is 64-183. The number64 represents the State of Alabama; 183 represents Centurion Poultry, 5087 County Road 35, Bremen 35033. These assigned numbers may be used by participants on shipping labels, certificates, invoices, and other documents for identification. The numbers may also be used as reference numbers for shipments to member States ofthe European Economic Community. Participant's Name Three types of participants are listed in this publication: hatcheries, dealers, and and Address independent flocks. Foreach State, the type of participant is given immediately above the first name in that category. Hatching-Egg Capacity Figures in this column refertothe hatching-egg capacity of hatcheries, according to manufacturer's rating, including setting and hatching trays. Letter symbols in this column referto products that dealers handle, as follows: E, hatching eggs; C, chicks; P, poults; and SP, started pullets. When an independentflock is listed, this column is left blank. Products and All products handled by participants listed in this publication meet the specific require- Classifications ^^^^^ ^^^^ „^ g puHorum-Typhoid Clean" classification. The combined letter and numeral symbols shown in the fourth column identify the particular breed, strain, or trade name of the participant's products (see tables 4 and 5 in the appendix). Crosses are designated by combining the letter symbols and code numbers of both parent stocks, listing the male first. Thus a T9T18 code would indicate thatthe participant was handling a cross consisting of a Hubbard male mated to a Pilch female. Addi- tional classifications for which these products qualify are identified in column five by MG, "U.S. M. gallisepticumClean"; MGM, "U.S. M. gallisepticum f^onitored; MS, "U.S. M. synoviaeClean,"; MSM, "U.S. M. synoviae Monitored; MM, "U.S. M. meleagridis Clean"; SAN MON, "U.S. Sanitation Monitored"; SE, "U.S. Salmonella enteritidis Monitored" for egg-type chickens; SE, "U.S. Salmonella enteritidisClean" for meat- type chickens; SALM, "U.S. Salmonella Monitored"; and Al, "Avian Influenza Clean."
