Scientists exploring a giant 192m-deep sinkhole in Guangxi, China, have discovered an entire forest inside it! The geologists think the weird woodland could be home to plant and animal species that have never been seen before. Wow! Sinkholes like this, also known as a tiankeng (meaning ‘heavenly pit’ in Mandarin), are created when rainwater dissolves bedrock, forming cave chambers that eventually collapse. One of about 30 sinkholes in the region, this pit's unique shape allows light to filter in, so trees can grow! After the sinkhole was discovered in May, a team abseiled down more than 100m and then trekked for several hours to reach the bottom. There, they found three separate cave openings plus 40m high trees and dense undergrowth that reached their shoulders. Unbe-/eaf-able! In the brothers’ neighbourhood, many people fly paper kites in competitions. But some coat their kites in powdered glass, intending to damage opponents kite strings. Sadly, this can be deadly for birds such as local black kites because it cuts their skin and slices their wings. Determined to help, in 2003 Mohammed ~ and Nadeem began caring for injured birds ina makeshift hospital in their basement. Stitching cuts and setting broken bones, they nursed the fliers back to health, housing them in a large rooftop aviary. In 2010, the pair turned the clinic into a charity named Wildlife Rescue. And since then, their volunteers have treated around 2,500 injured birds every year, including storks, owls and vultures. Great!
