In the left foreground of the photo taken from the northwest corner at Dean Street, two women head toward Broadway. It’s tempting to identify with them. Where are they headed and what does their day hold? Adding the photo’s immediacy is the familiarity of the roofli- nes and facades on the south side of First. They look essentially as they do now – in fact, as they have since about 1915. Looking at the street crowded with Model-Ts, who would have guessed that only a decade earlier the newfangled automobile had been competing with horse-drawn wagons for street space? To aficionados of the vintage-design River District Trolley, that bus approaching the entrance to Patio de Leon stands out. That bus was most likely one of the fleet run by Barron G. Collier’s Tamiami Trail Tours, which had a downtown terminal. Imagine you’re on that bus in 1926 and inching eastward (leftward). You’ll pass the Leon Building and the First National Bank at Hendry Street, followed by the Earnhardt and Langford Buildings. On the corner at Jackson Street, you’ll pass the three-story Bank of Fort Myers Building, whose roof is visible left center in the photo. A somewhat hazy seven-story Franklin Arms Hotel looms above the bank roof and left of the water tower. That “skyscraper” was still only a couple of years old when the The perspective from Dean Street is reminiscent of August 1926 photo by Gerri Reaves historic photo was taken. Still farther on in the distance at Royal Palm Avenue the steeple of the First Meth- odist Church projects distinctly above the trees. Meanwhile, on the north side of the street, the Tropical News sign (left) can’t be missed. That newspaper had begun publishing only six years earlier and had become a daily in 1922. The local press in August 1926 was full of large ads for banks and construction-related businesses, signs of boom-times. But this photo captures the end of the peak boom, although, of course, no one in the August 16, 1926 photo could have known. In four and a half weeks, the legendary hurricane of 1926 will hit. The subsequent physical destruction and economic downturn served as South Florida’s own prelude to the 1929 stock-market crash that marked the official start of the Great Depression. Walk down First and ponder the ephemeral nature of history. And promise yourself a ride on the Downtown Trolley when it resumes its run through historic downtown next season. You can pretend it’s 1926 as you are trans- ported down First.
