Whenoperational,thesystemwillprovidecontinuous,24 hourtrackingcoveragetoanexistingconstellationof approximatelytwodozenartificialsatellitesequippedwithpassiveretroreflectorarrays. Whendeployed,thesestationswillbeplacedsothattheyhavefullaccesstobothinternetandphone communication,witheachsystemcommunicatingregularlytoanexternalfacility(calledHome). Itisfromhere thatthestationwillobtainthesatellitepredictiondatafortheweek,receivethetrackingpriorityofsatellites, andsendinformationonsystemhealthandperformance.TheHomeFacilitywillsendtechniciansperiodically and/orwhenthesystemneedsrepair. Thereisalsoexpectedtobea(cid:862)caretaker(cid:863)presentmostofthetimeat eachfacilitywhowillmonitorthesystemanditsoperations. NGSLRincorporatesseveralkeydevelopmentsthatareunique.Forinstance,existingNASASLRstationsrequire operatorstodeterminesystemviability,avoiddirectcontactofthelaserbeamwithaircraftandground personnel,decidewhatobjectstotrack,andinteractivelyacquireandtrackthoseobjects.However,theNGSLR prototypewillbesemi automated,performingmanyoftheabovetasksautomatically,includingincorporatinga provenlaserhazardreductionsystem(LHRS)topreventthelasingofaircraft.Inaddition,NGSLRusesalow powerbeamcoupledwithahighfirerate(2000Hz),whichhasthedualbenefitofallowinglowerperpulselaser energylevels,whileincreasingthenumberofpossiblereturnsperunittime,henceenhancingthenormalpoint precision. Thistechniquecreatesahigherreturnrateperunittime,producingfinaldataproductsthatarethe sameorbetterthanthosefromlegacyNASASLRsystems.
