NASA Glenn Research in Controls and Diagnostics for Intelligent Aerospace Propulsion Systems Dr. Sanjay Garg Presented at: ICM 2006, Anaheim, CA Abstract With the increased emphasis on aircraft safety, enhanced performance and affordability, and the need to reduce the environmental impact of aircraft, there are many new challenges being faced by the designers of aircraft propulsion systems. The Controls and Dynamics Branch (CDB) at NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) Glenn Research Center (GRC) in Cleveland, Ohio, is leading and participating in various projects in partnership with other organizations within GRC and across NASA, the U.S. aerospace industry, and academia to develop advanced controls and health management technologies that will help meet these challenges through the concept of Intelligent Propulsion Systems. This presentation describes the current CDB activities in support of the NASA Aeronautics Research Mission, with an emphasis on activities under the Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) and Integrated Resilient Aircraft Control (IRAC) projects of the Aviation Safety Program. Under IVHM, CDB focus is on developing advanced techniques for monitoring the health of the aircraft engine gas path with a focus on reliable and early detection of sensor, actuator and engine component faults. Under IRAC, CDB focus is on developing adaptive engine control technologies which will increase the probability of survival of aircraft in the presence of damage to flight control surfaces or to one or more engines. The technology development plans are described as well as results from recent research accomplishments. s c i t s s m o e n t g s a y i S D d el n d i F o n s i i a s w l e s u v L o ol p .gdtb at o ac r 0 sW/ t r 5 9 a n P g 8 9 nW r f 6 8 @W o a e 2 - / C ce y G Chi 33- 433 g-1.gov n a nja ch 6) 4 6) garnasa h i sp Sa ran 21 (21 ay.erc. c o Dr. B h: ( X: anjww.l r A e r r P sw a e F l: :// nt ip a e A mhtt e h C s e c n e t a n h r B R c e s r g a ic n m i e a n l s n l y e e e D l t R d G n n n a I s A n l r o e r o t S l n G o f A C N d ee s n ed vv ie a ple titi ogd n ng ultias rspecrspec Safety, bility Health nt technolnostic anpropulsio monitori n from md model b pepe y, ti d meagc gensioanon stem stem rdabilit Compa AdvanceManagefor self diprognostisystem-Life usapredictio-Data fusensors informati al s Field yy o l m i SS f a or ti w f t p e l l A n l fo L oo e rod t rr m m ntnn a ntnt e n o ao Cti CoCo yst iro ne eighorat s v giwri es ms -ms - sion dEn nt Enuced m detuatorol ee ul n eraedteactntr tt p a ol, rysd co ss o , Tysn r yy r y t-lith ave e SS p it ulbiits ti t l aawrp n opulsion opulsion ncrease in ty, Capabi ologiesmance duced sor, ol Distributed, Fenhanced reliperformance -Smart senso-Robust, ada earch Ce amics Branch i i n e s r s n ntelligent Prntelligent Pr Multifold Reliabil ctive Control Techr enhanced perfornd reliability, and rmissionsactive control of ombustor, comprebration etc.MEMS based contpplications Glenn Re Controls and Dy II Afoae-cvi-a n o n i o t a m s i m xt at r rt e e y t e er Ai po st yst am nsit e men N en ns Sy S r e c G a e og D fa ge Tr c r r- ur a a P e S n ee p p a rr s u M s uu ir S k e ctct A ed ec gi e t D o uu t a l a r o rr r g ht n tt o e g h S S ect Int Fli ec d ProgramProgram Mission Dir on Safety ogram t gingTcraft Integrate Resilient Aircraft Control i r n r h t P A i a d e A s’s’ rc vi e e h m cc a A at cl lt e e i a r h g ii s g e tt e a uu e e V H n R t aa n a s I M nn c g oo ti n u c rr a i Wi ee n s n o AA o c s y er uti b ar AA A a g u t SS n c n S Ro o i i AA r m n W e s o NN A a c s d gr ni b e al o o u x nt r s s S Fi P r e c e m ni p a o u d s S r n e u p F y H D A n e A o p i o t d a l rr d ve ar ig fofo D an en az mit d cs cs IIF lsion nce ded ard h ent, Fiel and Diagnostiand Diagnosti n Safetyn Safety Safety am ntegrated Resilient Aircraft Control ……… Resilient Propu Control •Damage tolera design for exten operation; onbo effects assessm and recovery at Lewis ol ol oo n gr I ii o o ntrntr viatviat viati Pr of all m oo AA A is er te er CC s s v t o o y n n s nn g d t e h oo o n n C c r a a n sisi p , er h h ra PropulPropul grated Vehicle th Management ……… ropulsion Health Management elf awareness and s path, combustion gine state; fault-tol hitecture •Gas Path healt management •…..lenn Researc ntrols and Dynamics B e al P S a n c G o nt e • g e ar C I H n n e o o d s h ww dynamic mplementatince, safety, eropropulsi degrees aned fields tion facilitiecility groups in tagencies ee a t aa d a a y vivi ond imty m edel lun f ger el Controls & Dynamics Branch OverControls & Dynamics Branch Over ssion Research, develop and verify aerospace propulsimodeling, health management, control design anechnologies that provide advancements in perforenvironmental compatibility, reliability and durabili Facilitate technology insertion into the mainstreacommunity pabilities 20+ engineers and scientists -most with advancextensive experience in aeropropulsion controls r Extensive computer-aided control design and evancluding real-time and man-in-the-loop simulatio Strong working relationship with controls technoloaerospace propulsion industry, academia and oth n Research Centerat Lewis Fis and Dynamics Branch i t a i n ol M – – C – – – e tr l n G o C • • e s ds es ut h *h * s e ges in surabl meter spee ow eratur ures outp roacroac ular ga ate th rs.
