However,theeffectsof generalandlocalizedcorrosionover thislengthoftimehavenotbeendeterminedforthecandidatematerialsofinterest. In 1978,UmpquaResearchCenterimmersedstainlesssteel316L,321,and347 specimensina solutionof deionizedwaterandSpaceShuttleMicrobialCheckValve Resin. AdecisionwasmadeinAprilof 1990,to analyzetheeffectsofthisexposure. Chemicalanalysisofthesolutionwasperformedto determinethe levelofcorrosion formedoverthistimeperiod. Inaddition,thesurfaceof eachspecimenwasexamined withscanningelectronmicroscopyand metallographyto determinetheextentof generalandpittingcorrosion.Thisstudyshowedthattheattackonthestainlesssteels wasnegligibleand neverpenetratedpastthefirstgrainboundarylayer. Ofthethree alloysevaluated,316Lperformedthebest,however,allthree materialsprovedto be compatiblewithan aqueousiodineenvironment. Inadditionto thespecimensexposedto aqueousiodine,astainlesssteelspecimen, (unspecifiedalloy)wasexposedto moistmicrobialcheckvalveresinandair. This environmentallowedcontactofthe metalto theresinaswellasto theiodinevapor. Theexposureperiodofthismetalwasthoughtto be11yearsaswiththeother specimens. Sincetheparticularstainlesssteelalloywas notknown,energy dispersivespectroscopywasusedto determinethatthisalloywasstainlesssteel301. Intergranularcorrosionwasfoundonthespecimen;however,thecorrosionwas limitedto thefirstgrainboundarylayer. 2.0 INTRODUCTION UmpquaResearchCompany,of MyrtleCreek,Oregon,immersed316L,321,and347 stainlesssteelcouponsin MicrobialCheckValve(MCV)resinandwaterin September of 1978. Thesecouponshadbeenexposedto thisenvironmentforapproximately11 yearsand6monthsbeforetheywereremovedforanalysis. Thisstudywasconducted to investigatethecorrosiveeffectiodinatedwaterandMCVresinhadonthesevarious stainlesssteelalloys. Thegoalwasto providebetterinsightintothecriteriarequired fortheselectionof materialsintheSpaceStationFreedomIWS. Thespecific objectivesofthestudywereto determinethe: 1. Aqueousmetalionconcentrationsin eachsolution 2. Aqueouscationandanionconstituentsineachsolution 3. Corrosionratesof eachindividualmetalspecimen 4. Extentof pittingcorrosiononthemetalsurface UmpquaResearchCompanyperformedananalysisofthechemicalconstituents presentineachsolution. This includedanalysisofiodine,metalion,anion,andcation concentrationlevels. FollowingUmpqua'swork,themetalcouponsweresentto the JohnsonSpaceCenter(JSC)forsurfaceanalysis. Thesurfaceanalysisevaluatedthe degreeof bothgeneralandpittingcorrosionpresentoneachspecimen. Inthecourseof initiatingthisstudy,avialwasfoundthatcontainedastripof an undeterminedstainlesssteelalloy. ThisalloywasincontactwiththemoistMCVresin andtheairtrappedinthevial. Itwasdecidedthatthisspecimenwouldbeanalyzedin conjunctionwiththeotherspecimensto determinetheeffectsthat iodinevaporand MCVresinhadonstainlesssteel. Surfaceanalysiswasusedto evaluatethe extentof corrosionaswellasto determinetheparticularstainlesssteelalloy. 3.0 TESTARTICLES 3.1 STAINLESSSTEELTUBESINAQUEOUSSOLUTION Thetest articlesusedintheaqueousexposurestudywerepreparedfrom1/4" stainlesssteeltubing. Stainlesssteel316L,321,and347wereallsectionedin2-4cm lengths. Table1presentsdimension,weight,andvolumedatawhichwasobtained aftertheexposureperiod. Dueto thelowlevelof corrosiveattackwhichwasobserved inthe analysis,thespecimendimensionsarenotexpectedto havechangedoverthe test period. An accuratemeasurementof thelengthcouldnotbemadedueto the unevenendsofeachspecimen. Asa result,theequivalentlengthof eachsamplewas determinedfromthecalculatedcrosssectionalareaandthe measuredweightand densityof thespecimen. Surfaceareawasbasedonthediameterandlength dimensionsanddidnottakeintoaccountthecross-sectionalareaof bothendsofthe tube. Samples of 321 and 347 cutfrom the same pieces oftubing as the test coupons but not exposed to the iodine environment were available and analyzed for comparative purposes. A reference sample of 316L fromthe original stock was not available. 3.2 STAINLESSSTEELSTRIPINMOISTIODINERESIN The test article used in the moist iodine exposure study consisted of a strip of unknown stainless steel in contact with moist MCV resinand air. Table 2 lists the weight and dimensions of the specimen. The dimensions are approximate since both the length and width of the sample were variable. The surface area was calculated from sample weight and thickness measurements. 4.0 TESTCONDITIONS 4.1 STAINLESSSTEELTUBESINAQUEOUSSOLUTION Three Pyrexdisposableculturevials,16x 125mmwithrubberlinedplasticcaps,were usedto holdthe aqueoussolutionsandtest articlesinasealedenvironment. 2
