Preface Nanotechnologyisamongtheworld’smostpromisingnewtechnologies, anditisprojected to hold significant importance in the twenty-first century. Nanotechnology has revolutio- nized areas as diverse as engineering, information technology, and diagnostics. As the prevalenceofnanomaterialscontinuestoincrease, theriskofenvironmentalcontamination by nanoparticles is rising. Consequently, occupational and nonoccupational exposure to nanoparticlesisgrowing, andtheirhealtheffectscannotbeignored. Theuniquephysicalandchemicalpropertiesofsolidmaterialsatthenanoscalecontrib- ute to serious technical limitations and potentially misleading results using conventional toxicology assays. Due to their high surface area and hydrophobicity, nanoparticles can adsorb vital dyes, cell culture micronutrients, or related cytokines; therefore, the routine methods and protocols for larger-sized particles are unsuitable for nanotoxicology studies. ThemethodsandprotocolsinNanotoxicity:MethodsandProtocolsofthesuccessfulMethods in Molecular Biology series address the recently developed methods for investigating nano- toxicity. These methods and protocols range from routine nanotoxicology assays to geno- micsandproteomicstechniquesandincludebothinvitroandinvivoapproaches.Webelieve thisbookcanserveasastartingpointtointroduceresearcherstothemethodsandprotocols ofnanotoxicity, whichwillexpandtheworkbeingdoneinthisarea. The target audience for this book comprises researchers and postgraduate students in the fields of toxicology, environmental science, pharmacological science, and clinical medicine. I am deeply grateful to all contributing authors who devoted their valuable time and effort in writing outstanding state-of-the-art methods and protocols for this book. I also wouldliketothanktheserieseditor,JohnWalker, forhisvaluablesuggestions.
