TOWARDS HEALING AND SPIRITUAL MATURITY THROUGH CONTEXTUAL PREACHING IN KOREAN-AMERICAN CONGREGATIONS IN THE GREATER SEATTLE AREA A Professional Project presented to the Faculty of Claremont School of Theology In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Ministry by Youn Su Nam May 2013 ©2013 Youn Su Nam All RIGHT RESERVED This professional project completed by Youn Su Nam has been presented to and accepted by the faculty of Claremont School of Theology in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the D octor of M inistry Faculty Committee Stephen Kim, Chairperson Kathy Black Dean of the Faculty Philip Clayton May 2013 ABSTRACT Towards Healing and Spiritual Maturity through Contextual Preaching in Korean-American Congregations in the Greater Seattle Area by Youn Su Nam This study presents realistic guidelines for the pastors of the Korean-American immigrant churches in the greater Seattle area to prepare and preach the sermons that are holistic, that is, well grounded on the teachings of the Bible, relevant to the personal, emotional, social and relational issues and conflicts their members experience, and conducive to healing of the pain and conflicts, which together would enhance spiritual growth and maturity. To find what pain and conflicts the Korean-American church members suffer from, the author conducted interviews with 11 members according to the guidelines provided by the Qualitative Research Method. A careful analysis of the result showed many sympthoms of the pain and conflicts due to chronic loneliness, language and cultural issues, and, most importantly, spiritual instability and ineptitude. It also showed that they thirst for sermons for comfort and healing. In this study, the author provides the models for holistic healing sermons to enhance the healing of the pain and conflicts. Thus, the stated task of sermon-writing is the healing of the pain and conflicts by building the bridge between the needs of the parishioners and the teachings of the Bible, on the one hand, and, on the other, by offering the pastoral counseling service to promote healing and spiritual maturity. Summary of the Chapters Chapter 1 is an introduction to the Thesis, briefly outlining its Problem and the Purpose. Two issues are raised presently: 1) some Korean immigrant church pastors do not engage the Sitz-im-Leben (life-situation) of the parishioners seriously enough when they write sermons: 2) this sort of sermons are not helpful to the listeners who are suffering from severe culture shock as well as the immigrant status, language issues, personal and relational issue of financial and generational problems. To understand the real life issues of the immigrants, the author conducted interviews, in accordance with the guidelines of the Qualitative Research Method, with selected number of the Korean immigrants residing in the greater Seattle area with a view to analyze and problematize the pain and conflicts and pain they experience. Thus, the purpose of this Thesis is to assist the immigrant pastors to seek the so-called "holistic healing" of the pain and conflicts of the Korean immigrants through the biblical preaching that is theologically and based on psychological, social, and cultural research and real life interviews, which would bring about spiritual maturity as well as personal health and happiness. Chapter 2 is to propose and explain three elements of the holistic healing sermons for the First Generation the Korean Immigrant Churches; 1) the concept of holistic health, 2) the sermons that are biblically and theologically, 3) and the sermons that are geared for pastoral counseling. The concept of holistic health is based on one’s relationship with God, neighbors and the self in the holistic context of physical, mental, and spiritual well being. By “the sermons that are biblically and theologically,” the author has chosen the basic structure and meaning of the prophets in the Old Testament as the authentic and basic biblical message. According to the Old Testament, the prophets proclaim that God will bring the Israelite into the blessing or the cursing depends on their context and behavior. The prophets deliver God’s message with the Davidic Covenant based on the blessing and the Sinai Covenant included the cursing. And the pastoral counseling sermons means that sermons include the skills of the counseling. Three model sermons are presented as examples of each with the theme of conflict and healing. In Chapter 3, the author classified the data from the interviews and delineated major themes of the pain and conflicts. The author asked them guestions about their pain and conflicts and sermons they long for. According to the codes of the interviews the author had classified, many of them answered “separation” from their families and society(47%), and felt anxiety, atrophy, fears and stress(65.7%). Also, they long for sermons for pastoral counseling, and comfort for healing(38.7%). In short, these facts indicate that they are suffering from pain and conflicts due to separation, and that they realize the need for sermons for healing their pain and conflicts. In Chater 4, according to the current theories of psychological and psychiatric disciplines, the author analyzed the codes of conflicts classified. The results of the analysis of the codes of conflicts gained therefrom should indicate what sort of sermons are relevant and needed which will enable the author to formulate the holistic healing sermon model based on the three elements and, through coding the relationship between the theoretical bases with the types of sermons that the parishioners thirst for. They will also show the areas in which the peope feel the needs for healing of their pain and conflicts and the pastors need to pay more close attention to when they write sermons. In Chapter 5, the author attempted to present a clear direction of the holistic healing sermons that would help to heal the pain and conflicts and bring about spiritual growth and maturity by putting together the contextual needs of the people delineated from the analysis of the interview data and the biblical text interpreted according to the principles of biblically and theologically sound interpretation, psychological and psychiatric treatments in the context of pastoral counseling. The holistic healing based on the relationship with God, neighbors and the self is the stated task of such contextual approach, and two model sermons are presented here to assist the immigrant pastors to meet the spiritual as well as emotional and psychological needs in their preaching ministry; one "From Life of Worries to Life in Contentment" based on John 4:5-10 and 1 Kings 19:1-8, and the other "The God Who Finds Us" on Genesis 28:10-19; Luke 19:1- 10. In Chapter 6, as a conclusion, the author summarized the needs of the people, the pain and conflicts, and how the pastors can bring the healing message for the purpose of assising them to write holistic sermons and thereby helping the poeple to live healthy and holistic life, that is, physically and spiritually healthy life as the children of God. The preachers, as a point of emphasis, is poignantly reminded that they are not commanders delivering God's judgement from the lofty pulpits but rather commissioned pastoral counselors who, with God's compassion and power and authority, share life and all that brings to the people's peace of mind and spiritual maturity.
