I am excited to welcome you to Chicago very soon! Russell Tanguay Cheryl Brenn 2013 WLC “HOBY Daddy” Director of International Programs #myHOBYstory #WLC13 - CHICAGO THE HOBY STORY For five decades, Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) has worked diligently at helping young people make a difference and become positive catalysts for change—in the home, school, workplace and the community. As one of the nation’s foremost non-profit, non tax-supported youth leadership development organizations, HOBY is respected worldwide. Beginnings in an African Jungle In the summer of 1958, actor Hugh O’Brian received the invitation that would change his life. O’Brian, then 33, was in Winnipeg, Manitoba, parlaying his fame as television’s legendary Wyatt Earp into extra income by guest-starring with a circus. Then the cable arrived from French Equatorial Africa: Dr. Albert Schweitzer would welcome him at any time. O’Brian had long admired the German doctor-missionary-theologian-musician. “I’d read so much about him,” he reflects. “He was a great humanitarian who could have done anything he wanted in the world, and there he was in the middle of Africa taking care of people.” Within two weeks he was on his way, by commercial airliner, bush plane and canoe, to the famed hospital that Schweitzer had founded in 1913 on the banks of the Ogooue River in Lambarene. There he was met by a very old man with a huge, white walrus mustache, wearing white pants, shirt and pith helmet. “That was his uniform,” says O’Brian, recalling his first sighting of Schweitzer. The actor spent nine days at the clinic complex where Schweitzer and volunteer doctors and nurses, working without electricity or running water, cared for patients, including many with leprosy. Schweitzer, then 83, who had received the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in behalf of the “Brotherhood of Nations,” was concerned about global peace prospects and was impressed that the young American had taken the trouble to visit him. The doctor led the actor through history over those evenings. Schweitzer was convinced that the United States was the only country in the world with the ability to bring about peace. “He said the United States must take a leadership role,” O’Brian recounts, “or we are a lost civilization.” It was an unforgettable nine days. And, as O’Brian departed, Schweitzer took his hand and asked: “Hugh, what are you going to do with this?” Two weeks after returning from his 1958 meeting with Schweitzer, O’Brian put together a prototype seminar for young leaders. Five Decades Later. . . From 1958 to 1967, leadership seminars took place in Los Angeles for sophomores from California. In 1968 the scope of the HOBY program grew to include national and international participants, and the seminar moved annually to different major cities across the United States. Thus, the International Leadership Seminar, now known as the World Leadership Congress (WLC), began. In an effort to include more students nationwide, three-day HOBY Leadership Seminars were instituted in 1977 in which high schools throughout the country may select a sophomore to attend a HOBY seminar in their state. Annually, 8,000 tenth graders, representing as many high schools nationwide, graduate from HOBY Leadership Seminars. In 1991, HOBY added one-day leadership seminars called Community Leadership Education Workshops (CLEWs). These workshops have become popular because schools may select multiple students to participate. For more information about HOBY activities and sponsorship opportunities, please contact us. #myHOBYstory #WLC13 - CHICAGO THE WORLD LEADERSHIP CONGRESS Every summer the renowned World Leadership Congress (WLC), HOBYʼs most anticipated youth symposium, brings together approximately 400 high school students for a week-long, intensive educational program .In one week, the student Ambassadors undergo extensive leadership training in public speaking, team building, skills building, conflict resolution, and more. The ambassadors take part in interactive workshops and hear from leaders in science and technology, politics and media, business, and humanitarian aid; with ample opportunity to ask questions. HOBYʼs program is international in tone and subject, highly interactive, non-partisan, and inclusive of a variety of career sectors. Every year approximately 25% to 30% of WLC students hail from approximately twenty countries including Argentina, Canada, China, England, Germany, Guatemala, Hong Kong, Iraq, South Korea, Mexico, Nigeria, the Philippines, and Taiwan, to name just a few. Of particular significance to the ambassadors, the WLC is often their first opportunity to travel away from home and meet their peers from countries they have only heard of on the news. The students return home more mature individuals, more aware of the world around them, and more empowered to make meaningful contributions to their communities. For US Ambassadors Students must 1) be rising juniors; 2) have demonstrated leadership potential; 3) be one of the select few chosen by their schools to attend one of HOBYʼs regional State Leadership Seminars – occurring immediately before the WLC; and 4) complete the online application and submit fee within the first come, first paid parameters. More than 9,000 US students complete the seminars each year, and many of them vie for the seats reserved for US students. For International Ambassadors Students must 1) be between 15 and 17 years old during the WLC; 2) have demonstrated leadership potential; 3) have reasonable proficiency communicating in English; and 4) complete the online application and submit the fee within the first come, first paid parameters. Some of HOBYʼs international affiliates and recruiters may further require that the student attend a leadership seminar in their country if one exists. Students stay in dorms and are managed by a HOBY volunteer force of nearly 100 HOBY alumni and professionals, under the auspices of HOBYʼs Department of International Programs. #myHOBYstory #WLC13 - CHICAGO THE WORLD LEADERSHIP CONGRESS #myHOBYstory Program A very exciting part of the 2013 WLC program will be the opportunity for the Ambassadors to develop an idea and leave Chicago with a concrete plan to implement their ideas in their communities back home. The Ambassadors are encouraged to think of something they have always wanted to do or accomplish, which in turn positively impact their communities. What is a cause that you are passionate about? What is an issue that your community or world faces which you want to overcome? What is something you wanted to improve in your school? These questions will help you develop your idea. Your idea will eventually become an event, an organization, a non-‐proeit, whatever you may choose. Throughout the WLC, Ambassadors will attend interactive sessions with volunteers and speakers to assist with the Ambassadors processing of the things they learned, the skills they developed, and words of inspiration they heard. Processing and analyzing every aspect of the WLC will assist the Ambassadors in writing down their ideas and drafting a concrete plan. During these sessions, Ambassadors will reelect on the previous days’ activities and speakers and apply that to their plans. They will ask themselves, “What do I need to do in order to accomplish this particular goal?” “How will I accomplish this goal?” “What obstacles do I or will I face” “How do I overcome these obstacles?” This process allows the Ambassadors to delve deeper into the inspiration and excitement they all share during the motivating eight days. Ambassadors will be able to assess, even after their WLC experience, their ideas and plans. Ultimately, their ideas will be a continuation of their HOBY stories that will positively impact those around them. It is encouraged to start brainstorming. Share your ideas on Twitter and Facebook. Use the #myHOBYstory hashtag on Twitter. Join the conversation on Facebook. Interact with one another, because you never know when a fellow Ambassador or group of Ambassadors share in the same idea. Collaboration is always encouraged at the WLC! #myHOBYstory On Social Media WLC will have a strong emphasis on social media during WLC. Times specieic to use social media are built into the program, known as a “Social Media Blitz”. You will have designated times to share your thoughts and excitement with the world and those around you. This will be a central hub for Ambassadors, parents, family and friends to see what happens while WLC is happening too! #myHOBYstory #WLC13 - CHICAGO THE WORLD LEADERSHIP CONGRESS What will your HOBY story be? Hugh’s HOBY Story Hugh O’Brian spent nine days at a clinic in Africa with the famous humanitarian Dr. Albert Schweitzer. Dr. Schweitzer asked Hugh, “What are you going to do with this?” Hugh, as a famous actor and a Hollywood legend, could have easily returned to California and continued his career as he did before his trip to Africa. However, Hugh had a completely different idea. Hugh decided to answer Dr. Schweitzer’s question; and in turn, created HOBY. As a result of a simple question, Hugh created a vision and implemented his idea back in California, and eventually worldwide. Who knew a few simple worlds could result in something extraordinary that has changed lives for eifty-‐eive years. Starting #myHOBYstory Before WLC As you read on the previous page, the #myHOBYstory program will challenge you to develop an idea for an organization, group, project, event, or personal goal that you can implement back home and make your idea come to life. Start thinking of something you are passionate about. How can you make a positive change? What will you be doing once you return home? What can you do to empower others and improve the world around you? Do you want to run a food drive? Create a non-‐proeit for elementary school kids? Provide leadership opportunities for underprivileged communities? Do you want the ability to speak in public? Do you want to be the eirst person to go to college in your family? There are so many things you can do. But be ready to think, learn, be challenged, and develop your “how to” plan with your fellow Ambassadors at WLC. Developing #myHOBYstory During WLC WLC is more than friendships and inspiration. WLC is designed to help you realize your potential as a leader. More importantly, WLC will provide you with the skills and resources necessary to maintain your leadership potential, but also implement your ideas back home. Throughout the week you will engage with speakers and your fellow Ambassadors, have working sessions with WLC volunteers, and participate in group activities that will help make you think about your action plan. What will you need to do to implement your plan? Who do you need to talk to? Do you need to fundraise? Do you have to register your organization? What are your goals? These questions and more will be thought out while in Chicago. Implementing #myHOBYstory After WLC After eight outstanding days in Chicago, you will have an action plan. You will know exactly what to do and how to do it in order to see your idea and dream come to life. You will be inspired and have a huge network of 400+ Ambassadors and 100 volunteers who are here to support you. You will be answering the same question that Dr. Schweitzer asked Hugh, “What are you going to do with this?” Hugh had a vision and his vision continues to elourish to inspire the thousands of young men and women from around the world each year. You too can, and will, have a vision. You will be creating your HOBY story. #myHOBYstory #WLC13 - CHICAGO HOBY WLC 2013 Has Gone Mobile! A typical day at WLC includes a jam-‐packed day of substantive programming, including keynote speakers, panels, interactive activities, social activities, and group time. You will hear from world renowned speakers, challenge yourself to learn something new, and create lifetime memories. You will be part of a group of twelve student Ambassadors headed by an adult volunteer commonly known as a facilitator. Your facilitator will be in touch with you to welcome you to the WLC family before you depart your hometown. Your group will be joined by four others to form a section, which will be headed by a section leader. All together, there will be 35 groups divided into seven sections and 400 Ambassadors from around the globe. Program Highlights The HOBY Choir: At the end of the closing banquet, all WLC Ambassadors come together and sing for the volunteers, staff, and guests. Past WLC Ambassadors continually praise this activity as one of the most enjoyable. Even those of you who do not think you can carry a tune will be surprised at what a spectacular experience it is to sing with new friends from around the world, and I, for one, am eager to hear you. To prepare for this performance, there is a daily chorus practice. International Ambassador Presentation: If you are an International Ambassador representing a country other than the United States, please prepare to participate with the ambassadors from your country. There WILL NOT be time to prepare once you arrive in Chicago! At this event, every International Ambassador is encouraged to wear clothing or a costume that is representative of his or her country, and one person from each country will be called upon to share interesting facts and customs about their homeland. Please plan your presentation; there is a strict 5 MINUTE maximum so we will have time to hear from all of our international friends. Talent show: If you have a special talent – be it musical, athletic, dance, juggling, poetry, or whatever – please share your special skill with the rest of your new friends. If you need sheet music, instruments, CDs or props, be sure to bring them – and label them! If you bring music, it’s best to store it on a elash drive rather than in an iPod or other MP3 player. For more information about advance sign up for the talent see the talent show sign up form included with this information. There is overwhelming interest every year for the Talent Show with many amazing talents so not every interested Ambassador will get a spot in the show. Leadership for Service: During the WLC, all ambassadors participant in service activities throughout the Chicago area. There will be many details once you arrive in Chicago. One of the projects will include arranging backpacks eilled with art supplies for elementary school students. We are asking you to help by donating supplies. If everyone can donate 1 or 2 items we can help give some economic challenged students a fun summer activity. See www.hearts4arts.org for the 501 (C)(3) Virginia Newsome (WLC 2011) started. Examples: Boxed Crayons (example: box of 24); Colored pencils (box of 10 or 12); Colored pens; Sheets of stickers; Magic Markers (box of 8 or 10, washable is best); Glue Sticks; Clear or colored tape; School Scissors; Watercolor paints and brushes (the school kind that come in the plastic trays, not tubes); Plastic Rulers (6 or 12 inch); Construction paper; Craft paper; Miscellaneous craft items (stickers, popsicle sticks, pipe cleaners, etc.) Also, please bring two (2) old extra t-‐shirts (washed) with you as well, which will be used for a project. Trading Pins/Souvenirs With 400 Ambassadors and 100 volunteer staffers, we will all want to meet each other. One thing we do to help break the ice and get everybody acquainted is to trade pins, buttons, bumper stickers, pencils, etc. during the week, especially on the eirst day. If you can, bring something from your country, state or hometown that you can trade with others and explain a little about yourself. Feel free to get creative; you can make something if you like. WLC Closing Chapter Gala To celebrate the conclusion of the 2013 World Leadership Congress, HOBY will be hosting our closing banquet at Chicago’s historic Palmer House in the “Loop” downtown. As a registered Ambassador, your Gala ticket is included in your registration fee, however, HOBY does have a limited number of additional tickets available for family and friends who wish to join us for this fun evening. Tickets are $75 each and can be purchased by logging back into your online registration/application OR at https:// www.cvent.com/events/2013-‐world-‐leadership-‐congress-‐closing-‐ceremonies-‐gala/registration-‐ a641e44eeff948a3b201c1ecb60a4b00.aspx. Plan to bring out your dressy clothes! Suit/tie for gentlemen and dresses for ladies. #myHOBYstory #WLC13 - CHICAGO THE WORLD LEADERSHIP CONGRESS The WLC World What to Wear/ Pack HOBY T-‐shirts EVERYDAY! Upon arrival, you can look forward to receiving several HOBY WLC T-‐shirts and a nametag, compliments of HOBY. It is very important you include a t-‐shirt size in your application. During the week, all students will wear one color and the staff will wear another color. In addition to eitting in with the rest of the group, wearing the WLC designated “T-‐shirt of the day” and a nametag will help us identify you immediately in any crowd, enhancing safety and security. Please plan to wear a HOBY T-‐shirt when travelling to Chicago if you have one, it will help us identify you at your entry-‐point. Clothing: Plan on most of your wardrobe needs simply being shorts (8” inseam or longer, no “short” shorts will be permitted), Capri pants, jeans, slacks or skirts to go with a HOBY T-‐shirt. A simple guideline for fashion is this: wear layers of clothing so you can take the top layer off when you are warm and put something on when you are cold. Because Chicago is likely to be hot, but the auditoriums where we will spend most of our days are air-‐conditioned, layers consisting of long sleeve shirts, cardigan sweaters, sweatshirts, light jackets, etc. are best. Footwear: Please do not wear sandals, elip-‐elops or shoes or heels that look great but give you blisters or slow you down on our frequent walks in the city. Comfortable, lightweight walking shoes with socks or sturdy/sport sandals are essential. Fashion Exceptions: • International Ambassador Presentation, Monday, July 22: If you are an International Ambassador, please prepare to participate. At this event, every international Ambassador is encouraged to wear traditional clothing or a costume that is representative of his or her country. • Community Service Day, Wednesday, July 24: One of the highlights of WLC is heading out into Chicago neighborhoods to participate in service-‐learning projects. Please bring a pair of comfortable jeans or lightweight pants that you don’t mind getting dirty, sneakers, a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses to wear while doing some hands-‐on work with other organizations for a few hours. • The Closing Gala, Friday, July 26: This celebratory event is a time for you to dress up (men in a coat and tie, women in dresses or dressy outeits). So don’t forget to pack your comfortable dress shoes! While it’s not “prom formal,” the event will have a festive atmosphere. What NOT to Wear The following attire is not permitted at any time: strapless/tube tops, tops with spaghetti straps, tank tops, bare midriffs, exposure of undergarments, short shorts, mini skirts, excessively tight clothing, clothing with profane or offensive language or graphics, torn clothing, transparent clothing, and clothing with holes. Don’t forget these important items: If You Bring It, Label It You’ll deeinitely want to bring a camera for the many special moments you’ll have. A hat and sunglasses will be helpful for our outdoor walking times. We will have little opportunity to shop, but feel free to bring some spending money if you are in the market for some HOBY or Loyola University Chicago souvenirs. You may want to bring a few other items from home; all we ask is that you use your discretion so that you are not stuck with something you truly do not need. If you bring it, be sure to label it. This will help tremendously if it winds up in the lost and found bin. Something you don’t need: your laptop computer. We simply won’t have any time for it, nor is there online access in the dorms. Personal electronic/communication devices (iPods, MP3 players, Cell phones, handheld video games, etc.) are not allowed to be used during scheduled conference functions. You may be instructed to use your cell phone during designated social media times built into the program. HOBY discourages participants from bringing these devices to the seminar, if you do bring these items to the seminar; they are your sole responsibility. #myHOBYstory #WLC13 - CHICAGO
