When Alfred P. Sloan, Jr., joined Gen- eral Motors in 1918, it was a sprawling, loosely organized company heading to- ward severe financial and management crises. Two years later, after the resig- nation of president and founder W. C. Durant, Mr. Sloan and the du Ponts as- sumed management responsibility and began to develop the delicate balance between centralized policy control and decentralized operational responsibility that has made General Motors competi- tive in policy as well as in product. In Part I Mr. Sloan describes the ev- olution of the company's basic manage- ment policies and strategic concepts: the organization policy, the concept of finan- cial control, and the product policy which revolutionized the automobile market long dominated by Henry Ford's Model T.
