T
his has been a historic year for women in the MI industry.Rosie
Johnson, president of Mississippi Music, finished her term as the
first female chair in the 55-year history of the National Association
of School Music Dealers, and Robin Walenta, the president and
CEO of West Music, became the first female chair in NAMM’s
117-year history.
While many women have served on the NAMM board through the de-
cades, Walenta was the first to join the executive committee and ascend to
chair the board. For her, the position offers
an opportunity for the industry to take a
closer look at itself.
“We have to be more diverse and more
inclusive,” Walenta said in our cover article
this month. [See Page 46.] “I think I have
a responsibility to help change that. There
are a lot of great women in our industry.
I’m not the first; I’m just the first to sit
in this position. I need to leverage that to
help other women get the recognition that
they deserve.”
Walenta, in essence, put out a call to arms.
So in response, Music Inc. reached out to
a handful of women in leadership roles to
ask about working in MI. Within hours,
we received several heartfelt responses.
Our ad hoc panel described their obstacles, misconceptions and triumphs.
“The story of Musical Innovations is not the story of a woman starting
a business,” said Tracy Leenman, the founder and owner of the company.
“It’s the story of ‘The Little Engine That Could.’”
Christie Carter, co-owner of Carter Vintage Guitars, said: “I’m happy to
say it’s much easier now than it was almost 30 years ago. [But] there’s still
the general assumption that a man is going to know more about guitars than
a woman … If anything, being a woman — a knowledgable woman — is
an advantage.”
“Whether I am fronting a band or selling a guitar, I have always found
myself a minority, one of very few women in the room,” said Miriam Risko,
co-owner of Mike Risko Music. “I think it is empowering to have a success-
ful career in this industry — especially the retail part — since it is mostly
a male industry.”
The leadership of people like Johnson and Walenta is also as an oppor-
