Inthisbook,FrancescaBrittaninvitesustolistentofantasy,attendingboth toliterarydescriptionsofsoundinotherworldlynarrativesandtothewave of“fantastique”musicalworkspublishedinFrancethroughthemiddle decadesofthenineteenthcentury,includingBerlioz’s1830Symphonie fantastiqueandpiecesbyLiszt,Adam,Meyerbeer,andothers.Followingthe musico-literaryaestheticsofE.T.A.Hoffmann,suchworksallowedwaking anddreaming,realityandunrealitytoconverge,yokingfairysoundtoinsect song,demonicnoisetocolonial“babbling,”anddivinemusictothestrains ofwaterandwind.FantasticsoundworldsdisruptedFrance’snative traditionofmarvelousillusion,replacingitwithanewformofmagical materialisminextricablefromrepublicanactivism,theologicalheterodoxy, andtheadventof“radical”romanticism.
