How to Use this Book? This book includes 1060 questions from all parts of the radiology of the musculo- skeletal system. The book aims to present essential issues of the basics of orthopae- dic radiology. In the first seven parts (Parts I–VIII), the questions are arranged thematically, and the key to more complex questions include short comments and references to the literature. The purpose of these chapters is to show essential issues and highlight the differences between often similar conditions. These questions cover problems that, in my opinion, are essential and sometimes misunderstood. In radiology, we deal daily with debatable issues; hence in many places, I refer to con- temporary literature. The first seven parts aim to teach a reader by solving problems. In some questions, there is more than one correct answer. In the Part VIII are examples of the three exam sets. I recommend that you use these parts after going through the first seven parts. The purpose of the Part VIII is to test the knowledge. For each question in these sections, only one answer is correct. I will be very grateful for any comments from readers that will help improve the subsequent editions of the book. Good luck! vii Acknowledgements I would not have written this book without the help of many people. I would like to thank a few of them. I owe my interest in the musculoskeletal system to Professor Bogdan Ciszek, MD, PhD (Head of the Department of Clinical and Descriptive Anatomy of the Medical University of Warsaw, Poland). I would like to thank him for awakening my scientific ambitions, mentoring, and requirements motivating me to continuous improvement. I would also like to thank Dr. Nektarios Solidakis, MD (Head of the Department of Musculoskeletal Radiology at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden). Thank you for enabling me to continue my research and development and work on this book. Special thanks to my colleagues from the Department of Musculoskeletal Radiology at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden, for compelling cases and inspiring questions that were the direct inspira- tion for writing this book. ix Contents Part I Anatomy 1 Clinical Anatomy and Developmental Variants . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3 References . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 34 Part II A ppendicular Skeleton Trauma 2 Upper Extremity Trauma . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 37 References . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 93 3 Lower Extremity Trauma . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 95 Reference . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 145 Part III Spine 4 Trauma . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 149 Reference . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 154 5 Degenerative Spine . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 155 References . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 162 6 Infections . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 163 Reference . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 165 7 Varia . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 167 References . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 192 Part IV Tumors and Tumor Like Lesions 8 Bone Tumours . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 195 References . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 246 9 Soft Tissue Tumours . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 247 References . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 263 10 Varia . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 265 xi xii Contents Part V Arthritis 11 Arthritis . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 281 Part VI M etabolic and Miscellaneous Bone Diseases 12 Metabolic and Miscellaneous Bone Diseases . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 305 12.1 Metabolic Bone Diseases . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 305 12.2 Miscellaneous Bone Diseases . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 310 Part VII Interventional Radiology in the Musculoskeletal System 13 Interventional Radiology in the Musculoskeletal System . . . . . . . . . . . 317 Part VIII Examinations 14 Examination Set 1 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 323 15 Examination Set 2 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 349 16 Examination Set 3 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 375 Part I Anatomy
