1111 2 3 4 MUSCULAR JUDAISM 511 6 7 8 9 1011 1 2 13111 For centuries, the stereotype of Jews as physically weak and racially inferior 4 persisted across Europe. Zionist thinkers sought to turn this stereotype on 5 its head at the end of the nineteenth century by creating a popular counter 6 image: the muscular Jew. By emulating their ancestral war heroes (such as 7 Bar Kochba and the Maccabees) and participating in all aspects of the 8 contemporaneous European body reform movement, Jews could cultivate 9 discipline, agility, and strength—the very ideals that would help turn them 20111 into a healthy, physically fit, nationally minded, and militarily strong people. 1 In this interdisciplinary history of the Jewish body, Presner probes the 2 complex cultural and intellectual origins of the “muscle Jew.” He argues that 3 the Jewish body was radically reconfigured at the end of the nineteenth and 4 early part of the twentieth century in light of modern European discourses 5111 of regeneration. Traversing sports history, medical literature, popular culture, 6 aesthetics, gender studies, colonialism, and military history, Presner weaves 7 together the story of the regeneration of the Jewish body. 8 Richly illustrated with rare archival material, Muscular Judaism will 9 appeal to scholars and students of Jewish Studies as well as anyone interested 30111 in modern European history, gender studies, and histories of the body. 1 2 Todd Samuel Presner is Associate Professor of Germanic Languages 3 and Jewish Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles, USA. His 4 research focuses on modern German and German-Jewish intellectual and 5 cultural history.
