Muscle Energy Techniques What are muscle energy techniques? Muscle energy techniques (MET) describe those manipulative treatments in which a patient, on request, actively uses his or her muscles from a controlled position and in a specific direction against a distinct counterforce. These techniques are now widely recognised as an effective approach to the treatment of musculoskeletal dysfunction. They bring together treatment methods used in physical therapy, osteopathy and manual medicine. How can MET be used? These isometric and isotonic techniques are used to: • Strengthen or tone weak muscles • Release hypertonicity • Stretch tight muscles and fascia • Improve musculoskeletal function • Mobilise joints in which movement is restricted • Improve local circulation About the book In Muscle Energy Techniques Leon Chaitow and contributing authors set out clear, practical, clinical guidance for students and practitioners wishing to use MET techniques as part of their patient management.
