Over the past two decades, there has been an explosive growth in the use of digital multimedia (including audio, video, images and graphics) over the Internet and wireless communication. As the use of digital multimedia increases, effective data storage and management become increasingly important. In fields which use large quantities of data (e.g. audio, video, image and digital libraries; geographical and medical image databases; etc), we need to minimize the volume of data stored while meeting the often conflicting demand for accurate data representation. In addition, the data need to be managed such that it facilitates efficient searching, browsing and cooperative work. This area has been a very active research area in recent years. This book will provide readers with an up-to-date and comprehensive picture of cutting edge technologies in multimedia information retrieval and management, which directly affect our industry, economy and social life The book is divided into two major parts: Technological Fundamentals which covers the core theories of the area; and Applications which describes the broad range of practical uses for this technology. The book includes: a complete set of techniques for digital audio, music, images and video content-based retrieval; multimedia low-level feature extraction and high level semantic description, as well as the most up-to-date MPEG-7 standard; multimedia authentication and watermarking; and a broad range of practical applications (e.g., digital libraries, medical images, and biometrics, etc). It is suitable for use as a textbook for senior undergraduate and junior postgraduate students, and as a handbook for multimedia researchers, developers, and practitioners. VI Preface The contributors of this book are outstanding researchers in their areas and include: Professor Shih-Fu Chang, Columbia University, the IEEE Distinguished Lecturer for the Year of 2002; Professor H. K. Huang, University of Southern California, the author of "Picture Archiving and Communication Systems" (P ACS) and a pioneer of the P ACS systems; and Professor Edward A. Fox, Director of the Internet Technology Innovation Center at Virginia Tech and Co-Editor-in-Chief for the ACM Journal of Education Resources in Computing. The names and affiliations of all of the contributors are listed in the next few pages. We would like to thank the contributors for their excellent team work which enabled us to meet our tight deadline, which in tum has ensured that the information included is up-to-date. We would also like to thank Mr Z.Y. Wang and Ms W. Ho for their professional assistance in editing this book and Springer-Verlag for their support and efficiency throughout the process. David Dagan Feng, Wan-Chi Siu and Hong-Jiang Zhang (Eds.) About the Editors David Dagan Feng received his PhD degree in Computer Science from UCLA in 1988. After briefly working as assistant professor in USA, he joined the University of Sydney, Australia, as lecturer, senior lecturer, reader, and then professor. He is the former Head of Department of Computer Science/School of Information Technologies. He is currently Associate Dean of the Faculty of Science and Director of the Biomedical & Multmedia Information (BMIT) Research Group at the University of Sydney, and Professor and Deputy Director, Center for Multimedia Signal Processing, Department of Electronic and Information Engineering, Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He has published over 200 scholarly research papers, pioneered several new research directions, made a number of landmark contributions in his field, and received the Crump Prize for Excellence in Medical Engineering. More important, however, is that many of his research results have been translated into solutions to real-life problems worldwide and have made tremendous improvements to the quality of life. He is currently special area editor of IEEE Transactions on Information Technology in Biomedicine, advisor for the International Journal ofImage and Graphics, chairman ofIFAC-TC-BIOMED, and chairman ofthe International Programme and National Organizing Committees for the IF AC 2003 Symposium. He is a Fellow of ACS, HKIE, lEE and IEEE. Wan-Chi Siu received PhD degree from Imperial College of Science, Technology & Medicine, London, in 1984. He was with the Chinese University of Hong Kong between 1975 and 1980. He joined the Hong Kong Polytechnic University as a lecturer in 1980 and has been Chair Professor since 1992. He took up administrative duties as Associate Dean of the Engineering Faculty 1992-94, Head of the Department of Electronic and Information Engineering 1994-2000, and Dean of the Engineering Faculty 2000-2002. Professor Siu has been Director of Centre for Multimedia Signal Processing since September 1998. He has published over 200 research papers, and his research interests include digital signal processing, fast computational algorithms, transforms, image and video coding, and computational aspects of pattern recognition and neural networks. Professor Siu is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of VLSI Signal Processing Systems VIII About the Editors for Signal, Image and Video Technology and the EURASIP Journal on Applied Signal Processing. He was a guest editor of a Special Issue of the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems, Pt.II published in May 1998, and associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems, Pt.II between 1995-97. Professor Siu has held the position of general chair or technical program chair of many international conferences. In particular, he was Technical Program chair of the IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (ISCAS '97), and is now the general chair of the 2003 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing (ICASSP'2003) which will be held in Hong Kong. Between 1991 and 1995, Prof. Siu was a member of the Physical Sciences and Engineering Panel of the Research Grants Council (RGC), Hong Kong Government, and in 1994 he chaired the first Engineering and Information Technology Panel to assess the research quality of 19 Cost Centers (d epartments) from all universities in Hong Kong. Hong-Jiang Zhang received his PhD from the Technical University of Denmark, Lyngby, Denmark, in 1991. He has held the position of research manager at the Institute of Systems Science, National University of Singapore, and HP Labs, USA. Dr. Zhang joined Microsoft Research Asia (MRA) in 1999, where he is currently senior researcher and assistant managing director of MRA. Dr. Zhang is well known in the multimedia research community for his pioneering work in video and image content analysis, representation, retrieval and browsing. He has authored 3 books, 200 referred papers and book chapters, and numerous special issues of professional journals in multimedia processing and content-based media retrieval. He holds over 30 US patents and pending applications. "Image and Video Processing in Multimedia Systems" which was co-authored by Zhang, was the first book to address content-based image and video retrieval research. Since its publication by Kluwer in 1995, the book has become a classical reference text and the research contained therein has formed the technology basis for several start-up companies. Zhang currently serves on the editorial boards of five professional journals and a dozen committees of international conferences, including being the Program Committee Co-chair of the ACM 1999 Multimedia Conference.
