Multilateral Theology This book introduces a new “multilateral” methodology for the contemporary study of theology. It bases this methodology on the idea that there are too many materials contributing as sources for theologizing to sustain the “one method fits all” approach found in many systematic theologies within Christianity. What is neededinsteadissomethingthatreflectsthevariousandvariednatures, purposes, andtasksoftheologians’theologizingfortheirrespectivecontexts. EngagingmaterialsfromarangeofChristiantraditions, includingEvangelicalism, theCatholicMagisterium,andalimitedrangeofpan-Orthodoxresources,thebook analyzes and assesses major factors thathaveshaped different streams oftheology. Addressingdoctrinaldevelopment, scriptureandrevelation, historicaltradition and creeds, philosophy and truth, sciences and interdisciplinarity, experience, religiouspluralism, andculture, itdemonstrateshowthesevariousstreamscan form a multilateral whole. The book concludes by examining the centers and peripherals of methodologies in theologization for a spectrum of theological traditions/streams,bothacrossandbeyondChristianity. I discovered that discipleship classes in the Sunday School and church care-group (from an independent mega-church of nearly 3,000 members in the 1990s, which grew to approximately 10,000 members by the 2010s) had not prepared me to study theology or to theologize (the activity of doing theology) in the seminary and for the church. Yearslater, asprovidenceledmetoexploreserviceasanecclesialtheologian,it dawnedonmethattheprinciplesandmechanicsoftheologizinghadbeenbrushed over quickly within the first two to three weeks of a three-module systematic theologycoursecurriculumintheseminary.Butthetaskoftheologizing, whichis paramount to the curriculum of equipping learners for teaching and ministerial service, requiresmuchmorethanjustexploringmethodologyinafewshortweeks. Integral to good theologizing is the proficient evaluation and use of sources, includingresourcesfromvariousintra-Christiantraditions,otherfieldsoflearning, and other religious traditions. Yet, seminary education tends to emphasize spiritual formation, the acquisition of ministerial skills, and stashing up theological/doctrinal content (against other Christian traditions, other religions, and non-theological fields of knowledge). In a typical seminary education, learners are also instructed on the emphases and non-negotiables that each tradition would regard as paramount to the distinctives of their traditions. Ifseminaryeducationisintendedtolayfoundationsforalifetimeoftheologizing and ministering, then acquiring a competency in theologizingcannot belimited to only instruction that learners would receive during the first few weeks of a Christian/systematic theology module. To be sure, all modules in a seminary curriculum do contribute to the shaping of a theological mind. However, theological methodology which is so fundamental to theologizing would have tobereconceived.Manybooks onthemarketdonotcontaindesignatedchap- ters covering thematically the array of issues of theological prolegomena, and almost all existing work examines the Wesleyan quadrilateral as the dominant Preface ix approach.Arecentandabsolutelybrilliantwork,AModelforEvangelicalTheol- ogy (Baker Academic, 2020), by my colleague at the London School of Theology, Graham McFarlane, takes an “Evangelical quintilateral” approach to theologizing thatintegratesscripture,tradition,reason,experience,andcommunity(pp.xii,67, 239–245), enlivening the theological task with inspiring relational stories of how theologyconnectswithlife.PriortoMcFarlane’scoinageofquintilaterality, thefive componentsofscripture, tradition, community, experience, andphilosophyinthat order has been regarded as indispensable sources for theologizing in Grant R.
