For all women, irrespective of nation or era, known and yet to be discovered, thank you for your contributions to and shaping of history. I would also like to acknowledge the exceptional collegiality and great friendships I have been so lucky to enjoy at Stephen F. Austin State University. The Department of History, College of Liberal and Applied Arts, and Gender Studies Advisory Board have provided gen- erous support and encouraged me on innumerable occasions. Rare are such personal and professional relationships, for which I am incredibly thankful. Claire Phelan I first became interested in the subject of impressment as a graduate student of Gene A. Smith at Texas Christian University. His enthusi- astic mentorship of my career continues to this day, and I am honored to count him as both a close friend and trusted advisor. I would also like to acknowledge the generous support given to me by the University of Mary Hardin- Baylor. Provost Steve Oldham and Dean Danny Mynatt have encouraged me at every turn, and I am indeed indebted to them. I also consider myself extremely fortunate to be a member of the Department of History and Political Science led by Department Chair David Chrisman. A happier group of people would be hard to find. *** We would both also like to recognize our friends at Palgrave Mac- millan: Editorial Assistant Mike Aperauch and Senior Editor Chris Chappell. Both have worked tirelessly on our behalf and we are most grateful.
