Her father was Edwin Oviatt and her mother was Fanny Thompson. Thus, the book traces the Oviatt and Thompson lines which, as it turns out, are intertwined in complex ways as can be seen from the Table of Contents. As with all family histories, this is a work in progress. Al- though new information surfaces regularly, the time eventually comes when one needs to commit to paper that which is known. Additional copies of the printed book can be ordered for a very modest fee from Sheridan Books, Inc., 100 N. Staebler Rd., Ann Arbor, MI 48103 (www.sheridanbooks.com). If I am still alive, I can expedite the order if you contact me at [email protected]. As always, I hope that my children, their children and future generations to come will enjoy learning about their ancestors. There are fascinating stories here and many more to come in future volumes. CGM II November, 2010 THE OVIATT ANCESTORS Oviatt, recorded in English Church Registers under the variant spellings Oviatt, Ovet(t), Ovyatt and Ovit, and in France as Ovits, is a patronymic form of either of two personal names. The first, "Ovit(t),” is of Anglo-Saxon origin, deriving from the Olde English pre 7th century "Ofa, Ufa.” This ancient male given name is no longer re- corded independently, but forms the initial element of several English placenames, for example, Offa's Dyke, an old boundary between England and Wales, said to have been built by Offa, 8th century King of Mercia; Offham (Kent); Ovingdean (Sussex); and Ovington (Essex). The suffix "-itt" represents a French diminutive ending, being a reduced form of "petit.” The likely source of the surname in France is "Ovide,” from the Latin "Ovidius,” a male given name meaning "good, kind,” made famous by the Roman poet Ovid, circa 43 B.C. - 17 A.D. Further forms of the name found in Midi and Provence include: Ovize, Ovitz and Ovise. “Some of the many changes of the name in England are Oviatt, Uthiatt, Uthiat, Uthwatt, Uthworth, Outhwatt, Outhwait, de Utteworth, de Ottewurth, Uthitt, Uthkitt, Uskitt, Uffiatt, Uffutt and others. “Whole families are often found in nearby localities with the names changed in spelling and pronunciation a little different. The Oviatt family of America, is a very old English family, of Norman (French) origin, entering England with William the Conqueror in the year 1066, A. D. It has not been definitely settled what the name was at that period, but the family settled in Central Southern England and every century or generation has brought many changes in the name until there are dozens and dozens of families in England who have different names, all originating from the Parent family of Normandy. “Buckinghamshire, England appears to have been the home of many Oviatt families about the year 1550, and there are many records of births, marriages and deaths in the numerous parishes of that county. “Wendover, Buckinghamshire was the early seat of residence of many and it was from this locality that the first Oviatt to America hailed from; Thomas Oviatt, 1630.” 1 1 From Charles H.
