Before this year, the most dramatic changes occurred in 1976, when the Anglo-American Cataloging Rules were first used to create catalog records for the MOCAT and, at the same time, these records were made available in electronic form through entry into the OCLC system. Of equal, or perhaps greater significance, are the changes to the MOCAT that are now taking place. Beginning in 1996, a new CD-ROM version of the MOCAT will be introduced. Most of the features of the traditional paper version are included in the CD-ROM version. An online version of the catalog is now available on the World Wide Web. These new MOCAT formats will make it easier for users to retrieve information on Federal publications. The paper version of the MOCAT will continue to be available with shorter entries and a keyword title index. The microfiche version will be discontinued after the December 1995 issue. The magnetic tape version of the MOCAT will continue in its present form. Users now have access to cataloged records of Federal publications in the following formats: Monthly Catalog of United States Government Publications on CD-ROM (Monthly issues cumulate from beginning of year includes cumulative indexes) Monthly Catalog of United States Government Publications (paper edition) (This new paper version of the MOCAT has short entries and a title keyword index (the CD-ROM version will include other indexes formerly included in paper version)) Online version of MOCAT available on GPO Access Federal Locator service via World Wide Web. (Users of the online Locator service can identify publications and locate a depository library that includes them in their collection. New records may be accessed daily on the Internet at: http://www.access.gpo.gov/su_docs) GPO Cataloging Tapes may be purchased from: Library of Congress Cataloging Distribution Service Customer Services Section Washington, D.C. 20541-5017 U.S.A. PRELIM. 5 USERS’ GUIDE Catalog Arrangement and Indexes The bibliographic entries in the Monthly Catalog are arranged in Superintendent of Documents classification number order. Each record is also assigned a unique catalog number, which consists of a two-digit prefix representing the catalog year, followed by a sequential number beginning with | in the first issue of each year. Within this arrangement, the publications of each Government author are further identified by the name and address of the issuing agency. Catalog entries in this catalog may be accessed by title keyword index (an alphabetical list of truncated titles, arranged by important words selected from publication titles). Please consult the CD-ROM version of the MOCAT for indexing accessed by: Keyword Author Title Series/Report number Subject Stock number Contract number Classification number Indexes in the CD-ROM version of the Monthly Catalog will cumulate from the beginning of the calendar year through the current issues. Abbreviations The abbreviations used in the bibliographic records all versions of the Monthly Catalog are those described in the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules, 2nd ed., and the GPO Classification Manual: A Practical Guide in the Superintendent of Documents Classification System.
