MClS Fall Training Workshops Conducted MCIS staffconducted seminars forexisting and potential clients during October and November. A total ofeight sessions were held across the state in the following communities: Poplar, Glendive, Miles City, Billings, Livingston, Helena, Kalispell, and Great Falls. A total of68 people attended these four-hour CIS forWindows Training sessions. Participants not only were shown how to use the CIS for Windows software more efficiently, butwere also able to practice their new skills in a "hands-on" mode at thecomputer labs at each site. MCIS gratefully acknowledges the support from these sites for making tJicircomputer facilities available fortraining. In addition to the normal Fall seminars, MCIS provided training to the followinggroups: two Job Service Case Management II Workshops, Job Service staffat Missoula and Butte, County Welfare staffat Bozcman and Helena, Adult Basic Education in Billings, and Career Futures in Butte. In all, more than 150 CIS users were trained at 15 separate sessions. ? Consortia and School District Fee Changes Thisyearmarked a reduction in the fees paid by most MCIS sites. As always, MCIS continues tofindways toget currentcareer and labor market information in—to thehands ofas many people as possible. We are pleased to announcethat therewill nowbeone rate for school districts $2,000. This n—ewpolicy allows a school district to lease the software forone rate and then use theprogram in all ofthe schools in thedistrict elementary, middle school andhigh school. It is important that careereducation begin at an early age. There are many schools in the statewith greatcareereducationprograms starting inthe fifth andsixth grades. As School-to-Work progresses in the state it is more importantthanever forstudents tohave access to CIS forWindows. We are sure thatmany school districts will take advantageofthis special rate. MCIS alsoencourages groups to call aboutdiscounts forconsortia. A group mustmeetthe following criteriafor consortia discounts: I) Itmustbe apre-existinggroup, 2) musthave aminimum offive sites, and 3) have a singlebilling source. TheReal Game is acareerexplorationprogram that uses role playing andothergame themes and devices to exposeyoung peopletotherapidly-changingworld ofwork. The Real Game allows students to experience the issues and aspects oflife theywill soon growto face as adults. Theprogram is deliveredoveraminimum of 18 classroom sessions. At the start, students fill out a "What I KnowAbout the WorldofWork" questionnaire. Next, students complete a "Wish List" that introduces them to awiderangeoflifestylechoices. Whattypeofhousingwould they like? Whatkind of vehicle do theywant? Do theywant a swimmingpool, a snowmobile, a stereo system, apet? Aftercompleting theirWish Lists, students are assignedwork roles from one of40 in thekit. The work role sheetcontains information such as educational background, salary, transferable skills and leisure time. Can theirnet salaries keep up with their "wants" oreven meet theirneeds? Are theyhappywith their assignedworkroles? Andwhathappens when they are "downsized" out ofajob? These aresomeofthe true-life situationsyoung people areexposed to in The Real Game. The Real Game is currently beingused atthe Middle School level in several states. The Real Game will bedisplayed attheMeeting the CareerChallenges in the 2F'Centuryconferences in March. For more information, call 800-633-0229. Jody Ceartin, 5* grade teacher at EastHelena Public Schools, is currently piloting The Real Game in herclassroom. Shewill be attending the conferences in March to relateherexperiences and provide feedback on The Real Game. Enhancements for CIS for Windows for Fall 1997 The fall 1997 releaseofCIS forWindows will have someexciting enhancements. Oneofthe most helpful features is a search button. By selecting this option, the usercan search the files by typing in a key word. If the userwants to see all occupations that include theword technician, they wouldjusttype in technician and thoseoccupations would appear in a list. The WhatNext? screen is takingon a different look. Insteadofthe More button currently atthe bottom ofthe list, the programs will be listed on the same screen as theother selections. This will make iteasierto find Micro-SKILLS,job search, military occupations, assessment link and apprenticeship programs. Therewill also be a new button. Restart forNew User. For those users who used tohave the DOS version andwere used to the save feature, that featurewill nowbe included in the CIS forWindows version as save/restore. Each sitewill also be able to print a summary report ofthe files accessed. This report can be very useful in finding out what topics are being used most frequently and which ones arenot being used enough. We appreciate feedback from our sites. It's becauseofyoursuggestions that manyoftheseenhancements have been included. We are sure thatyou will enjoy the new features.
