The General Index Volume 12 (L-Z) also contains the Words and Phrases Defined in Code Index and the Popular Names and Short Titles Index, which are also updated through the 2011 Regular Session. Included in the General Index is treatment of the laws compiled in the Montana Code Annotated, the constitution of Montana and the various rules of the state courts. Statutory provisions are referred to in the index by section number, e.g. 2-11-101. The court rules are referred to in the index by title and chapter number, e.g. T25-Ch20 MRCP Rule 8(d). The index is topical, meaning the main headings represent general concepts of law or specific statutory concepts. Additionally, certain main headings may be used where the material is known by a specific legal or common term, e.g. LEMON LAW. Under this topical arrangement, each heading contains exhaustive treatment of the subject matter, using individual entries as well as cross references to related matters. Below are a few general rules for use of this index: 1) Consult the principal and not the secondary subject. For example, for information about adoption of children, look under ADOPTION, and not under CHILDREN. 2) Consult related headings. If your search for a heading or a sub-heading under a particular heading is to no avail, try a related topic. For example, if a search for “Inmates” under a particular heading proves fruitless, try looking for or “Prisons and prisoners” or “Correctional facilities.” 3) Use cross references. Cross references exist to direct you to the location where the subject matter you are seeking has been treated. Group section references (e.g. 2-17-550 to 2-17-553 or T37-Ch48) have been attached to many of our headings and sub-headings in the index. They provide the option of going directly to the statutes for the cited material, rather than delving deeper into the index. 4) Use definitions to aid in your search. Starting a search using the Words and Phrases Defined in Code Index presents a diverse sampling of statutory terminology which could suggest other headings to consult. The index benefits from customer suggestions. Especially helpful are popular names or legal terms specific to your area of practice. We are grateful for your assistance in the ongoing improvement of the index. To contact the Indexing Department, you may use the following methods: Toll-free number, 1-800-897-7922, for assistance in locating material within the index, or to make comments or suggestions, or E-mail to [email protected]. For issues not directly related to the index, such as missing pages, ordering or other customer service information, you may contact Customer Service via a toll-free number, 1-800-833-9844, or by toll-free fax at 1-800-828-8341.
