Yet it is a given that art creation is not an all-male preserve. Modern Painters has always been about all artists regardless of gender. This edition continues in redressing the balance. A long way under the male price on BASI comes Georgia O’Keeffe with her $44.4 million painting “Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1.” While it is only a matter of time before this female record is beaten, it is not all about money. Women artists are getting more appreciation and respect. This era of #MeToo and #TimesUp is accelerating the pace, something never anticipated by male sexual predators from the worlds of politics, entertainment and art. When art lovers are asked to select the best Contemporary artists, names that may come up include Yayoi Kusama, Jenny Saville, Bridget Riley and more. We start with our own provocative Top 10 list: feel free to agree or disagree with our reasoned choices. In this issue, we interview and proile many more women artists, such as Israel-based Beverly Barkat. She is known for a huge variety of media, such as her colorful translucent PVC panels seen in the last Venice Biennale and a new show in Rome. We also tour the latest show at Alison Jacques Gallery in London, famous for championing female artists. The latest display features Hannah Wilke, whose intimate works contain many traces of the female body, reclaimed from male voyeurism and turned into a celebration. We also survey an even more wide-ranging event, “Half the Picture: A Feminist Look at the Collection” at the Brooklyn Museum. This is not to shut men out; we interview the American artist Daniel Arsham, 38, in his Long Island base; the French painter Robert Combas, 61, at his home in the south of France; and Mehdi Moutashar, 75, at his studio in Arles. Matthew Rose recalls his friendship with the correspondence artist Ray Johnson, while the curator Jérôme Neutres reveals how he conceived the Joan Miró retrospective at the Grand Palais in Paris. We also feature Petrit Halilaj’s show in Kosovo; the latest incarnation of “The Clock” at Christian Marclay at Tate Modern; and retrospectives of Gustav Klimt, Ellsworth Kelly and Jean-Michel Basquiat. There is something sobering in that many Basquiat pictures, dashed off in a few hours, earn more at auction than the entire lifetime outputs of some of the women mentioned above. We end up coming full circle with male artists such as Allen Jones getting attacked for their works, which in 2018 are being re-evaluated and sometimes seen as sexist. Sarah Moroz looks at a show of Balthus in Basel, as his provocative images of girls are caught in the crossire of #MeToo. Moroz’s essay concludes that while Balthus is now a problematic igure, his exceptional oeuvre shows what art history can unmask for us. 4 MODERN PAINTERS OCTOBER 2018 BLOUINARTINFO.COM For over 45 years, Blouin Gallery Guide has been the definitive connection between art lovers and art.
