Mutual internal migration has been an age-long feature of interaction among the various groups not only of West Africa, but other parts of Africa. The economic situation in Africa has also given rise of late to migration beyond the African continent by asylum seekers to Europe. All these migration trends have also had serious impact both positive and negative not only on the African continent, but on its citizens. It therefore, becomes imperative that scholars and those interested in the well-being of the African continent and its citizens should focus on these developments. This publication is, therefore, most welcome in focusing attention on this significant development. Bolanle Awe—Professor of History; Former Director, Institute of African Studies, University of Ibadan, Nigeria; Pioneer Country Director (Nigeria), John D. & Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, USA; Former Pro-Chancellor, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Although much of the public discourse concerning African migration concerns the attempted movement to other parts of the world, academic writing has repeatedly noted that most migration takes place within the continent. However, it has tended to focus on the same sets of familiar cases and issues. These companion volumes are refreshing because they introduce us to many less well-known instances which amply illustrate just how mobile African populations really are at the regional, intra-regional and global scales. The focus on the ways in which migrants carve out livelihoods in liminal urban and border settings; seek to maximize their educational options; and relate to the structures of neighbouring states offers much that is new. Other contributions which address so-called international migration shed interesting light on questions of the family in migration, the formation of diasporas and the central role of remittances for sending communities. The various contributions, emanating from younger scholars who are often researching countries other than their own, are both empirically rich and informed by larger comparative literatures on mobility. These collections, which are clearly framed by the editors, deserve a wide readership. Marie-Caroline Saglio-Yatzimirsky—Professeure, Anthropologie des migrations et du développement, INALCO, CESSMA, Paris In times of fear of a so-said ‘mass exodus’ from Africa to Europe, it is a priority to bring nuance through sound empirical analyses. African migrants predominantly move within the continent. The two volumes edited by Elieth P. Eyebiyi and Angèle F. Mendy present rich empirical case-studies on intra-regional mobility patterns and its consequences. They offer inedited reflections on the relations between migration, mobility and development in Africa. The in-depth knowledge of the mostly African authors adds to the quality of a research field, which was for long far too Eurocentric. Eric Hahonou — maître de conférences, Université de Roskilde, Danemark In this double-volume on Migration, Mobilities, and Development in Africa, Elieth P. Eyebiyi and Angele F. Mendy, have successful assembled not only competent team of researchers but also opened intellectual canvas to reflect on often ignored dynamics of intra-African migrations mediated by rhizomatic social relationships while refreshingly distancing their work from common developmentalist perspectives with their predictable focus on poverty and crimes alluded to migrants. Sabelo J. Ndlovu-Gatsheni—University of South Africa (UNISA), author of Epistemic Freedom in Africa: Deprovincialization and Decolonization (Routledge, 2018) Migrations, Mobilities and Developments in Africa Vols 1 & II are a seminal contribution to international literature and research. Scholars will find contemporary tropes problematised and nuanced prisms adopted to illuminate the researched local realities. The themes of the books are comprehensively and expansively examined from the stand points of multiple actors/ families engaged in mobility. The chapters are authored and located in Africa but the grounded approach to research and the findings offer insights into human resilience that should be of great relevance to migration/mobility scholars around the world.
