TheMONAMIconferenceseriesaimsatclosingthegapbetweenhithertocon- sidered separate and isolated research areas, namely, multi-access and resource management, mobility and network management, and network virtualization. Although these have emerged as core aspects in the design, deployment, and operation of current and future networks, there is still little to no interaction betweenthe experts in these fields.MONAMI enables cross-pollinationbetween these areas by bringing together top researchers, academics, and practitioners specializing in the area of mobile network and service management. This year, after a thorough peer review process, 15 papers were selected for inclusion in the main track of the technical program. In addition, MONAMI 2012 hosted two well-received workshops: the Second MONAMI Workshop on Smart Objects and the First Open Connectivity Services Workshop, organized in cooperation with the EU FP7 SAIL project. All in all, 25 papers were orally presented at the conference. Thirty-four Technical Program Committee (TPC) members made sure that each submitted paper was reviewed by at least three researchers with relevant expertise, including at least one TPC member. Theconferenceopenedwithahalf-daytutorialon“OperatingHeterogeneous Wireless Networks with SON (Self-Organizing Networks),” a key and emerging topic in modern mobile communications, presented by Henning Sanneck and Andreas Lobinger of Nokia Siemens Networks. John Strassner, CTO Software R&DLaboratoryofHuawei,USA,openedtheseconddaywithaspecialtutorial on “Semantic Middleware for Orchestrating Behavior.” This year’s conference featuredthreekeynotes:SvenvanderMeer(Ericsson)gavehisviewonheteroge- neousnetworksandbigdataduringhistalkentitled“HetNets,BigData,Cloud, SDN...AllProblemsSolvedandYourLunchServed,Right?”JoelJ.FleckII(HP Labs) talked about cloud computing in his keynote “Slipping the Surly Bonds of Earth – Challenges of Dynamic Cloud Computing.” Finally, Sajal K. Das (University of Texas at Arlington) complemented the Smart Objects workshop withhistalk“ModelsforServiceDiscoveryandResourceManagementinSmart Environments.”Lastbutnotleast,thisyear’sconferencefeaturedawhiteboard- ing session (chaired by John Strassner) on “New Ideas in Computing.” For full details on this year’s program, visit www.mon-ami.org. This volume includes the revised versions of all papers presented at MON- AMI 2012 in a single-track format, organized thematically in five parts as fol- lows; Mobile Networks in Part I; Heterogeneous Networks (HetNets) aspects are discussed in Part II; Part III presents new approaches related to Wireless VI Preface Communications; Part IV addresses Smart Objects and IoT Applications; and, Part V includes papers presenting forward-thinking solutions for Future Net- works, embracing virtualization, security, and coding techniques. AttendanceincreasedinMONAMI 2012.The newcomersexpressedtheirlik- ing of the collegial atmosphere that characterizes the conference. This makes it an excellent venue for presenting novel research work as well as for fostering stimulatingdiscussionsbetweentheattendees.ThesuccessofMONAMI2012re- inforcesits importance asa keyannualconferenceinthe calendarofresearchers in this area. We are happy announce that the fifth edition of MONAMI will be hosted by Cork Institute of Technology in September 2013. We closethisprefacebyacknowledgingthe vitalrolethatthe TPCmembers and additional referees played during the review process. Their efforts ensured thatallsubmittedpapersreceivedaproperevaluation.WethankEAIandICST forassistingwithorganizationmatters,CREATE-NETandIEEEComSocGer- manySectionfortechnicallyco-sponsoringtheevent,andHamburgUniversityof Technology for hosting MONAMI 2012.
