Miscellaneous Personal Data on Alexandria African Americans, 1862-1868 The information in the following large table is drawn from many sources, chief among which are the records of the Alexandria office of the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands. This was generally compiled a dozen years ago, but many of the sources were not mined exhaustively for information. I intend to again comb these sources more thoroughly, but that is unlikely to occur within the next two years. So the reader will have to accept the information as it is—recorded accurately, but not the last word on many individuals. I hope that the information presented will be sufficiently self-explanatory. Most of the individuals are freedpeople from Virginia, many of whom depended in some way on the Freedmen’s Bureau, an inherent bias in the data. Only two of the sources cited below are published ones, records of marriages and deaths compiled and transcribed by Wesley Pippenger. Only a fraction of the entries in these books have been cited, and only to expand upon or corroborate information in the Freedmen’s Bureau records. The names are arranged alphabetically by surname. Use the “find” function, and consider possible alternate spellings.
