Danthonia spec.: Hemsley,KewBull. (1896)36. Culmstufted,branching mainly extra-vaginally atbase,0.12-0.5m long. Blades3— 15cm by 0.4-0.8mm, glabrous, ultimately articulating withthe sheath. Peduncle glabrous. Inflorescence with3-13 spikelets, contracted, 2-6 cm long, axes pilose. Spikelets chasmogamous, 4-6-flowered, 6.5-9 mm long (excl. awns). Glumes subequal,6-9 mmlong, slightly shorterthanthe spikelet (tips ofupperlemmasand awns protruding), glabrous. Lemmamargins with2 tuftsof hairs, hairs 1.25-1.5 mmlong, andwith arow ofa few inconspicuous few-haired tuftsabove thecallus (obscured by the callushairs); body 3-3.5 mm long; laterallobes 2-3 mmlong, 0.5-0.92timesas long as body; setae 1.5-3.5mmlong, 0.67-1.1timesas long as flatportion oflaterallobes; awn7-10mmlong, exceeding setae by 3-4mm(when wet), with 1-2basal twists. Paleamargin (inside) withouttuftsofhairs. Anthers 1- 1.5 mmlong. Distribution- Celebes (Bonthain). Habitat- Insubalpine coppices, disturbedplaces, 2500-2890maltitude. Note- Ms.M. Gies (FR, in litt.)reported thepresenceofaxillary cleistogamous spikelets inBiinnemeijer 12260(L). Ihaveseenthesheet, butnot thespikelets. Glumessubequal, 6-8 mmlong, shorterthantoas longas thespikelet (then onlythe awnsprotruding), gla- brous. Lemmawith 2tufts ofmarginal 1-1.5 mmlong hairs,with 1 tuftofshorter hairsnext totheupperoneand withoutany abovethecallus; body2.5-3mmlong; laterallobesfusedwith thecolumnor free, thenup to2.5 mm long,0.6-0.9 times as long as body; setae 1-1.25 mm long, 0.5-0.63timesas long as flat portion of laterallobes; awn 5.25-7mmlong, exceeding setae by 1.8-3 mm, with 0-1 basal twists. Palea margins (inside) about halfway with atuftofc. 1 mm long hairs.An- thers0.75-1 mm long. Distribution- Papua NewGuinea, NorthernProv., MtSuckling. ADanthoniavestitain culmisbasi intra-vaginaliterramosis,paniculis sat densis, plusquam 20 spi- culis 7.5-11 mm longis(aristis excl.), costa glumaepuberula adpilosa in glumasuperiore,lem- matepilorum caespitibus densisin serietransversali aliquotspatiosub sinu,setis 1-2 mm longis, arista8.25-9.25mm longa,paleadorsaliteraliquotpilis provisa, antheris 0.75-1.25mm longis differt.—Typus:ANU 10952 (Hope) (Lholo;BO,CANB), New Guinea,Irian Jaya,Carstensz, Carstensz meadow, 13Dec. 1971,3510m. Culms tufted, branching intra-vaginally atbase, 0.16-0.3 m long. Blades 14-27 cm by 0.5-1 mm, pilose, not articulating withthe sheath. Peduncle glabrous. In- florescence with morethan20 spikelets, contracted, dense, 6.5-7.5cm long, axes pilose. Spikelets chasmogamous, 3-or 4-flowered, 7.5-11 mm long (excl. awns). Glumesas longas thespikelet, midribpuberulous topilosein theupperglume.Lem- ma with a transverse row of2.75-3.25 mm long, densely tuftedhairs some way below thesinus, andoneabovethecallus; body 2.5-2.75mmlong; laterallobes2- 3.5 mmlong, 0.73-1.4times as long as body; setae 1-2mm long, 0.3-1 timesas long as flatportion ofthelobes; awn 8.25-9.5mmlong, exceeding setae by 4-5 mm, geniculate, with0.5-1 basal twists. Note- ANU 10976(Hope) (BO,CANB,L) from theLowerMerenvalley ofthe Carstensz is asterilecollection, and only tentativelyincludedhere, mainly because Danthoniairianensisis theonly tallDanthoniaknown atpresentfromtheCarstensz. Ithas densely tufted, dullculms, quite unlikethe shiny ones ofD. irianensis, and very distichousleaves.Ithasthehairy auricles sotypical ofDanthonia. Specimens seen:ANU 10952(Hope)(T), 10976(Hope);Wissel21. Danthoniajavanica Ohwi ex Veldk., spec. nov. Danthoniapilosa auct.nonR. Br. Pedunculi glabri.Spiculae 10.5-14 mmlongae(aristaeexcl.)aristis solum protrudentibus. Glumae spiculas plus minusveaequantes.Lemmata primasolum caespitibus(sub)marginalibusdistinctis, corpore 2.5-3.25mm longo,aristis 8.5-11.5 mm longis,columno brunneo spiris basalibus 3-4. Margopaleae(intus) sine pilorum caespitibus.—Typus: Afriastini 264 (L holo;BO,K,P), Java,, MtLawu,21 May 1981,c.3100 m. Culms tufted, branching mainly extra-vaginally atbase, 0.13-0.6m long. Blades 5-19cm by 0.4-1 mm, glabrous, ultimately articulating withthe sheath. Peduncle glabrous. Inflorescencewith3-11 spikelets, contracted, 2.5-9cm long, axes pilose. Spikelets usually cleistogamous, 3-6(-8)-flowered, 10.5-14mmlong (excl. awns). Glumesas long as the spikelet (onlythe awns protruding), glabrous. Lemmawith2 tuftsof 1-1.5mmlong hairs alongthemargin only; body2.5-3.25mmlong; lateral lobes2-3 mmlong,0.62-1.2timesas long asbody; setae 2.25-3.5mmlong,0.9- 1.6timesas long as flatportion oflaterallobes; awn 8.5-11.5 mmlong, exceeding setaeby 3.75-5.5mm(when wet),with 3-4basaltwists. Paleamargin(inside) with- outtuftsofhairs. Anthers0.6-1.15mmlong. Distribution Java: Priangan (Papandayan), Madiun(Lawu), Malang (Arjuno), - Besuki(Argopuro). Habitat- Montaneandsubalpine grassfields,open,sunny, sandy torocky places, inCasuarinaforest, locally verycommon, 2350-3100maltitude. Note- Thisspecies was identifiedbutnot published by OhwiasDanthoniajava- nicaOhwi. Specimens seen:Afriastini 264 (T); Backer s.n.
