FULL-BUILD: WORLD WAR TWO ALLIED ARMOUR DRAGON 1:35 SU-76I WITH CUPOLA • KIT NO.6856 ROLLING THROUGH THE RASPUTITSA Jaffe Lam paints and weathers-up Dragon's excellent 1:35 SU-76i as a mud-coated machine on the harsh Eastern Front... D uring the battle of Stalingrad, the Soviets had captured a large number of well-conditioned Panzer III and StuG III armoured vehicles. The SU-76i was developed as a stopgap measure in early 1943 when the original SU-76 production was halted due to factory problems. The 'i' stands for “Inostrannaya” meaning foreigner in Russian. It was a hybrid self-propelled gun based on the Panzer/StuG III chassis with its 76.2mm S1 gun mounted on a welded superstructure. This fully enclosed configuration was loved by the crews as it could better protect them from weather and mortars, grenades, small arms fire and shrapnel. It also had a huge impact on morale under the harsh Russian winds and temperatures in winter, which is better than the open top design of the original SU-76. Its amour-piercing rounds could penetrate 75mm armour plate at a distance of 500m and 82mm at 100m range. However, it could not penetrate the front armour of a Tiger but could knock out a Panzer III or IV. The oil heater was installed to protect the engine from extremely cold weather with temperatures at -35 degrees Celsius. A reinforced shield was added over the mantlet to stop stray bullets. The driver sat on the left and had limited vision. He could only see the front and the left through an armoured vision slit. By November 1943, some 181 of these tank destroyers were built, twenty of them being command versions equipped with improved, high-powered radios and a Panzer III commander’s cupola fixed on the roof. Less ammunition was carried to give more room for the radio and maps. 8 Military Illustrated Modeller - July 2022 AFV Edition 9 FULL-BUILD: WORLD WAR TWO ALLIED ARMOUR DRAGON 1:35 SU-76I WITH CUPOLA • KIT NO.6856 Once the issues with the original SU-76 were resolved, the production of SU-76i was halted in November 1943. Another reason the vehicle never entered mass production was that it was more expensive to strip down and rebuild a captured Panzer III than to build a new SU-76. The SU-76i fought from the spring of 1943 to the early spring of 1944 and they were also part of the Soviet armoured forces in the battle of Kursk. Some SU-76i vehicles were recaptured and reused by the Germans. The German version of this Dragon’s SU-76i with cupola (kit No.6856) is the second version of its SU-76i series. As the name and the box art of the kit show, this is a vehicle with a commander’s cupola and winterketten tracks and was recaptured by the Germans and put back into service. However, the model made here illustrates that the Soviets took ownership of the tank from the Germans! Dragon left the modification of the upper hull part for us. I had to make the cutout myself on base of the superstructure to accommodate the gun breech. The build instruction provided exact dimensions for the cuts. However, to play safe, I used test-and-fit approach to ensure the cutout was not larger than required After construction was complete, the model was first sprayed with Tamiya White Fine Surface Primer followed by Mr Surfacer Black 1500 to render a black and white base The Russian green base colour was mixed from Tamiya Acrylic XF-4 Yellow Green, XF-58 Olive Green and XF-62 Olive Drab. It’s important to let the pre-shaded Vallejo washes were applied areas show through one by one to enhance tonal richness. Since this wash is acrylic based, a semi-gloss varnish was applied in advance to provide a smooth finish and avoid tidemarks Eduard’s Russian number masking tape was put on and Tamiya Flat White XF-2 was sprayed The number 213 fitted quite well on both sides of the superstructure 10 Military Illustrated Modeller - July 2022
