It was the last game of the season, a night game in Kansas City, Missouri. Cabrera was in position to win the American League (AL) Triple Crown. But Cabrera’s home run lead was slim. He led Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton by just one run. Cabrera had 44 home runs. Hamilton had 43. If Hamilton hit a home run that night, the two would end the season with a tie. Cabrera would lose the Crown. In the Tigers dugout, players watched the Rangers game on laptop computers. But Hamilton did not homer in the Rangers’ 12–5 loss to the Oakland A’s. Cabrera was the 2012 AL Triple Crown winner! Cabrera finished the season with 44 home runs, 139 runs batted in (RBIs), and a .330 batting average. But Cabrera was less excited about his award than that the Tigers had made the playoffs. Would they make it to the World Series? His parents called him Miguel. Miguel’s family lived in the La Parera neighborhood. Their small house had a kitchen, a bathroom, and two other rooms. From an early age, Miguel’s life was filled with baseball. His father, also named Miguel, played baseball on several Venezuelan teams. Miguel’s mother, Gregoria, spent 14 years playing shortstop for the Venezuelan national softball team. Miguel’s family lived next to Maracay Stadium. Miguel watched his father and his uncle play baseball there. Miguel and his younger sister, Ruth, quickly learned the game. Miguel and Ruth sometimes practiced together. They used a stick for a bat and wadded up a piece of paper for a ball. 88
