I am grateful to my former supervisors, Professor Thomas Faist, Bielefeld University, and Professor Joaquín Arango, Universidad Complutense de Madrid who helped me start and further develop this project. Thomas Faist discussed with me many aspects of this book, provided invaluable comments on draft chapters as well as ongoing support and encouragement. For many years I have benefited from his expertise and the friendly atmosphere in the research group on Transnationalization, Development and Migration which he directs. During my visits to Madrid, Joaquín Arango was of great support in discussing with me the rapidly changing immigration situation in Spain and the equally dynamic legal reforms as well as the progress of my empirical research. For the Spanish city cases I benefited greatly from two research stays at the Instituto Universitario Ortega y Gasset (IUOG), Madrid, and the Centro de Investigación de Relaciones Internacionales y Desarollo (CIDOB), Barcelona. Without these opportunities this study most probably would not have been possible. At both institutions I was provided with office space and other privileges, and above all with support and interest in my work. Colleagues in Madrid and Barcelona shared their professional insights into the new immigration situation in Spain and also often their more personal experiences with me. They drew my attention to recently finished studies and ongoing research and assisted me with hints and suggestions on the more practical challenges of empirical research in this special field. I am particularly indebted to Gemma Pinyol at CIDOB and Professor Joaquín Arango in Madrid for many helpful suggestions and support. The empirical field research for the Spanish city cases was supported by a grant from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). A grant from the Young Researchers Fund of Bielefeld University supported my work on the book in the final stages of research and writing. I would also like to thank the participants of several researcher seminars and colloquia at Bielefeld University for continuous discussion throughout the research process, data analysis and writing. Several friends and colleagues accompanied the writing of this book at different stages of whom I wish to mention Eva Dick, Jürgen Gerdes, He-Young Haubner, and Eveline Reisenauer for helpful comments and suggestions on several draft versions of different chapters. Special thanks also go to Peter Lenco who has carefully edited this book and to Eva Drebenstedt for providing assistance in the preparation of the manuscript. viii Migrants and Cities Greatest thanks goes to all the people who were willing to share their time and perspectives with me, upon which large parts of this study are based and without which it would never have come into existence, although responsibility for interpreting and presenting their views is all mine.
