WorkingwithALMClientMSIGeneratorinvolvesthefollowingsteps:
1. MakesurethatthemachineonwhichyouwanttoinstallandrunALMClientMSIGeneratormeets

2. InstallALMClientMSIGeneratorfromMarketplace.Formoreinformation,see"InstallingALM

3. GenerateanALMClientMSIfile.Formoreinformation,see"GeneratingALMClientMSIFiles"on
page9.

Considerations
Microsoft.NETFramework4or4.5mustbeinstalledonthemachineonwhichyouwanttorunALM

ClientMSIGenerator.
ToinstallandrunALMClientMSIGenerator,andtorunALMclientMSIfiles,youmustloginwith
l
administratorprivileges.
ALMClientMSIGeneratoronlysupportsmultipleindependentserverswiththesameversion
l
installed.Forexample,version12.60ofALMClientMSIGeneratorsupportsall12.6xALMversions.
ALMClientGeneratorsupportsALMserverswiththefollowingproxyorWebserverconfigurations:
l
Forwardproxywithnoauthenticationorwithbasicauthentication.
l
Reverseproxywithnoauthenticationorwithbasicauthentication.
l
WebserverwithbasicorNTLMauthentication.
l
Ifadoubleauthenticationschemeisused,MSIfilegenerationfails.
l
ToenablecommunicationwithanALMserverconfiguredforHTTPS,themachineonwhichyourun
l
ALMClientMSIGeneratormusthaveavalidSSLcertificate.
ALMClientMSIGeneratorcannotrunonanFDCCworkstation.
l
l External Authentication.ALMClientMSIGeneratordoesnotfullysupportexternalauthentication,
howeverthefollowingworkaroundcanbeusedtobypassexternalauthenticationwhenusingMSI
Generator:
Whenexternalauthenticationisenabled,ALMClientMSIGeneratormustbeinstalledontheALM
server.TheServerAddressfieldmustcontaintheURLoftheALMserveronwhichALMClientMSI
Generatorisinstalled.
Example:
ALMserverisinstalledonamachinethatwillbeaccessedusinghttp://alm.com/qcbin.Let’s
assumethatthereissomeexternalauthenticationonthismachine.
GeneratetheMSIfileasfollows:
1. InstallMSIGeneratoronthealm.commachine.
2. SetthemainURLforMSIgeneratortohttp://localhost/qcbin.
WhenMSIGeneratorisdeployed,itaccessesanyserverwiththesameALMversioninstalled,
includingalm.com.

Installing ALM Client MSI Generator
ThissectiondescribeshowtoinstallALMClientMSIGenerator.
Toinstall ALM ClientMSI Generator:
1. DownloadALMClientMSIGeneratorfromMarketplace.TheClientMSIGeneratorInstaller
launches.
2. OntheSelectInstallationFolderpage,selectafolderinwhichtoinstallALMClientMSIGenerator,
oracceptthedefaultfolder.
3. Afterfilesareinstalledonyourmachine,clickFinishtoclosetheinstaller.
4. TocopysettingsofALMClientMSIGeneratorfromonemachinetoanother,copythedatfolder
andfilesfromtheinstallationdirectoryonthefirstmachinetotheinstallationdirectoryonthe
secondmachine.

UsetheALMClientMSIGeneratortogenerateanALMClientMSIfile.
GenerateanewMSIversioneachtimetheALMserverordatabaseschemasareupdated.Thisincludes
thefollowingcases:
Apatchisinstalled.
l
Anextensionisinstalled.
l
Anewtesttypeiscreated.
l
ALMserverconfigurationsarechanged
l
TogenerateanALMClientMSIfile:
1. Logonwithadministratorprivileges.
Note:YoumustruntheALMClientMSIGeneratorlocally,andnotoveranetwork.
2. CloseanyopeninstancesoftheALMClientMSIGenerator,andofInternetExplorer.
3. RuntheALMClientMSIGenerator.TheGenerateClientMSI forALM Serverpageopens.
Alternatively,youcanexecutetheALMClientMSIGeneratorfromthecommandlineusing
commandlinearguments.Formoreinformation,execute“ClientMSIGenerator.exe/?”fromthe
commandline. 
4. IntheServerAddressfield,fillintheURLoftheALMservermachineforwhichyouwanttoa
createaclientMSI.Usethefollowingformat:
http://<ALMservername>[<:portnumber>]/qcbin
Note:OnlyHTTPandHTTPSprotocolsaresupported.
IfyouaregeneratinganupdatedMSIfile,fromthedropdownlist,selectaserveraddressthatyou
previouslyentered.
External Authentication users.Usehttp://localhost:<port>/qcbinintheServerAddressfield.
5. Tochangetheproxysettings,clickProxySettings.
6. Fillinthefollowingfields:

MSI Name TheMSIfilename.TheMSIfilenameincludesthefollowingelements:
ALM serveraddress.AsenteredintheServerAddressbox.
MSI version number.Theversionnumberincreasesautomaticallyeachtimeyou
createanMSIfileforthesameserveraddress.
Save MSI TheoutputfolderinwhichtheMSIfileissaved.ItisrecommendedtosavetheMSI
in fileoutsidetheALMClientMSIGeneratorprogramdirectory.
7. Selectoneofthefollowingoptions:

Include SelectthisoptionifyouwanttoregisterALMclientcomponentsonthe
Component workstations.ALMclientsmustberegisteredtoenableuserstoworkwithother
Registration MicroFocustestingtoolsaswellasthird-partyandcustomtools.Formore
information,refertotheMicroFocusApplicationLifecycleManagement
InstallationandUpgradeGuide.
Use Shared SelectthisoptionifyouwanttodeployALMclientcomponentsonashared
Deployment locationofaclientmachine.Thisisusefulforusersonvirtualenvironmentssuch
Mode asCitrixandVMwareaccessingthesamelocation.
Skip SelectthisoptiontoinstructtheMSItobypasschecksforsystemprerequisites
Prerequisites onclientmachines.Thisisusefulonmassdistributionsystems,whichwilldeploy
Check clientcomponentsevenifprerequisitesaremissing.
Note:Toenablethisfeature,youmustdefinetheSKIP_CLIENT_
PREREQUISITES_CHECKsiteparameter,andsetitsvalueto“Y”.For
moreinformation,refertotheMicroFocusApplicationLifecycle
ManagementAdministratorGuide.Thisfeatureisnotsupportedon
workstationsusingALMExplorer.
8. TogeneratetheMSI,clickGenerate MSI.
TheProgressdialogboxopens,displayingtheprogressoftheMSIgeneration.Thismaytake
severalminutes.ClickShowDetailstodisplaylogdetailsoftheMSIgeneration.
Note:YoucanalsoviewthelogfileoftheMSIgenerationinthe<ALM ClientMSI Generator
installation directory>/logdirectory.
9. AftertheMSIisgenerated,intheProgressdialogbox,clickGotoMSItoopenthefolderinwhich
theMSIfileissaved.
