With over a million cars now on the road, and the oldest models some 9 years old, we believe the
demand for parts is very high. Like all the vehicles that Rimmer Bros supply parts for, the New MINI has
very British roots (although now owned of course by BMW but produced at Cowley in oxford) and
therefore fits snugly with our ‘family’ of cars and parts.
Rover in fact, started work on the New MINI back in 1993 which was soon enhanced by the arrival
of BMW the following year. the original Mini (which we class as the Rover Mini and already supply parts
for) has its origins back in the 50’s with Alec Issigonis’s first design. It’s production continued into the
90’s, but with ever increasing eC emission regulations, drive-by noise ratings and impending euroNCAP
crash testing demands, its long-term fate was clear. In addition, the Mini was exceptionally labour
intensive and therefore expensive to produce.
It was time for a change.
Rover was working on a replacement for the Metro, so therefore was looking for a new design that
would replace both cars. the New MINI was the solution. When BMW bought MG Rover from British
Aerospace in 1994, they inherited early designs of the New MINI and allowed Rover to continue on with
its development. However, BMW also had some ideas for the New MINI and after many years of
development from concept cars in 1997 to the official launch in 2000 (when “Mini’ became ‘MINI”) and
finally to its debut on the UK market in July 2001. Since then, this very successful car has been enhanced
and developed with many new models and variations. Manufacturing output is now at record levels.
Attractively priced and with strong residual values, the New MINI is a worthy successor to its
predecessor.
