Thasday lanuary 8, 2015, BOSTON Defining the legacy of Mass. Gov. Deval Patrick Pragmatic. The state’s first black govern leaves office lefined by his work, not his color. As Gov. Deval Patrick leaves office to make way for Gov-elect Charlie Baker, the legacy of the state's first black ‘governor has been opened up for debate. Fred Bayles, the director of Boston University's State House Program, a. student political journalism program, said he was unsure if there was going to be any signif cant, lasting legacy from Pat- rick’s two terms. “One could say he was a fairly good steward during a time of national economic crisis.” he said. “But 1 don’t think they're going to be building lots of statues of him” Bayles said Patrick did not understand the limitations of the governor's office and the power of the Legislature. “Blindfold yourself and on some issues you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between him and Mitt Rom- ney,” said Bayles, ‘John Portz, a political sci ence professor at Northeast- em University, disagreed. He thought Patrick's legacy would be a “generally post tive one.” Portz described Pat- rick as a “pragmatic liberal” — the kind of pol who reso- nates with the state’s voters. The Legislature wouldn't support Patrick's proposed tax increases need- ed to raise the funds. Tom Whalen, a political historian from Boston Univer sity, said Patrick had manage- ment setbacks with scandals plaguing the Department of Children and Families and the state’s Health Connector. Whalen said Patrick managed the state's finances “fairly meet financial commitments established in the contracts. Specifically, NSTAR said Cape Wind failed to secure financing or begin construction on the project by Dec. 31, 2014. They also failed to post “financial security” that would have extended that deadline. “The deadlines Cape Wind has missed were contractually agreed-upon by confidently” — the state was spared the brunt of the 2008 recession — but the state’s casino gaming law that was passed may “blow up in his face.” ‘Whalen and Cunningham both said Patrick's efforts to diversify the state govern- ment and judiciary” were notable and significant. “The judiciary may be his longstanding legacy.” said Whalen. But at the prod- ding of Showbiz 411’s Roger Friedman, she's reconsider ing her previous position of not wanting “to become part of the public debate.” So where does she stand? Firmly in Camp Cosby. Of course, it's not enough for Rashad to just dismiss the accusations from the numer ous women claiming Cosby abused them over the last few decades; she also has to suggest some sort of greater (albeit incredibly vague) conspiracy going on. “Forget these women.
