Both canbedistinguishedfrom other congenericspp.bytheirdark,almostblackterminal abdominal segments. INTRODUCTION Previously, theywere 18knownspeciesofMetaleptobasis (DAIGLE,2003),allne- otropical. However,IincludedMetaleptobasis rosea (Selys, 1877)[[Leptobasis] inthis genus,butthisis nowknownasInpabasis rosea (Selys, 1877)[Leptobasis] (GARRI- SON, 2002). Thisreducedtheknownnumberofspecies to 17. TheadditionofM. lil- lianae,whichis mostsimilartoM. manicaria(WILLIAMSON,1915)fromnorthern SouthAmerica, increasesthetotalto 18species. Thegenusisrecordedforthefirsttime fromBolivia.Thelarvaisunknown. DESCRIPTION METALEPTOBASISLILLIANAE SP. NOV. Figures1-5 Material. —Holotype<3 andallotype9(incopula):BOLIVIA,Cochabamba Department,Chapare prov.,lake 2.5kmWofVillaTunari gateonHwy4,12-XI-2001,JerreU J,Daigleleg.(JJD); —Paratypes (186,1 9):samedata asholotype,1<3,1 9(JJD),1<5JimT.Johnsonleg.(JTJ)and4(3 Ken J.Tennessen leg.(KJT);samedataasholotypebutll-XI-2001,12<3(JJD). —Theholotype,allotype,andaparatypeare depositedintheUniversidadAutonoma“GabrielReneMoreno”(U.A.G.R.M.)inSantaCruz, Bolivia.The 196 J.J.Daigle remainingparatypesareinthecollectionsofJferrellJ.Daigle,KenJ.Tennessen,JimJohnson,RosserW.Gar- rison,theFloridaStateCollection ofArthopods(FSCA),theInternational OdonataResearchInstitute(IORI) inGainesville,Florida,andtheNationalMuseumofNaturalHistory(USNM)inWashington,D.C.,USA. Etymology.— Thespeciesisnamedaftermymother,LillianAgnes Russett Daigle, forencouragingmetoexplorethewondersofthenaturalworld. male(holotype):Head. — Eyesinlifegreen,posteriorquarterportionblood-redand edged withblack.Lightbrownlabrumwithbluishtinges andasmalldarkcentralspot. Mandiblesand genaelightblue. Anteclypeus mottledblue, postclypeus darkbrown. Anteffonslightblue,postfrons darkbrown.Antennaebrownwithbasalsegmentsringed withblack,blue,andbrown.Occiputandvertexmostlybrownandlightbrown,bluish areabetweenantennae andeyes (Fig. 1).Ocelliringed withblackbasally,two parallel black slashmarks lateraltoocelli.Rearofheadlightbrown. Thorax. — Prothorax brown, slightly darker dorsally.Twostout mesepistemal horns(0.7 mmlong) tapering apically. Homs directedantero-laterally (Fig. 2).Black middorsalcarina; mesepistemum black in medialquarter, brown laterally. Mesin- fraepistemum, mesepimeron, metepistemum, metinfraepistemum, and metepimeron allbrown.Venterpalebrown. Legs. — Palebrown; armature black, no clawteeth. Wings. — 13postnodal crossveins inforewings, 12inhindwings. Veinsblack;dark brownpterostigma overlying 1cell, itsproximal sideoblique. Abdomen.— Mostly blackdorsally withbrownlaterally, incompletepalebasal Figs 1-5.Metaleptobasislillianaesp,n.,holotype6 (1-4),andallotypeS (5);(1)dorsalviewofhead; — (2)lateralviewofcephalad-directedleftthoracichorn; —(3) dorsalview ofcaudalappendages;—(4)lat- eral viewofcaudal appendages;—(5)lateral view ofovipositor. Metaleptobasislillianaesp.n. 197 ringsanddarkapicalringsonsegments3-6.Segment 1and2 mostlybrownwithblack dorsally.Segments3-4withlightbluishtinges overlaying thebrownlateralareas. Seg- ments5-6 withdarkerbluetinges, almostblack. Segment 7 brownwithblack tinges basallyandlaterally,pale basalringonly. Segment 8brownwithdarkerbrowninbasal half.Segment 9withabasaltriangular-shaped darkbrownareaextendingrearwardand downbothsidesof segment.Segment 10variegated withequal amountsofblackand yellow-brownareas.Dorsalmarginelevatedandtrapezoidalinlateralview;slightlybifid tobasebutstronglytruncateddorsally.Caudalappendages darkbrown,black apically. Indorsalview,both cerciandparaprocts converging inwards attips(Fig. 3).Cerci in lateralviewwideatbase, thennarrowingapically withblack tips hookeddownward. CerciaboutVithelength oftheparaprocts. Viewedlaterally,brownparaproctsof uni- formwidth,blackerapically, roundedandknobshaped towardsapex(Fig. 4). Measurements (mm). —Totallengthincludingappendages48.0,abdomen40.5,forewing24.2, andhindwing24.1. FEMALE(allotype). — Verysimilartoholotypeincluding thoracichorns;incomplete abdominalrings not as distinct. Colorpattern very similarexcept abdominalsegment 10uniformly darkbrown.Ovipositor blackwithdarkbrownareadorsally,extendsjust beyond posterior marginof segment10andtolevelofdarkbrownconicalcerci(Fig. 5). No vulvarspine; styliblack. Wings. - As inholotypeexcept 13postnodal crossveins inhindwings. Measurements (mm). —Totallengthincludingappendages46.0,abdomen39.0,forewing25.5, andhindwing25.0. VARIATIONAMONGPARATYPES.— Paratypes similartoholotypeandallotype.Some 3 withbent, depressedorbrokenthoracichorns.Totallength(mm)of3 rangesfrom 44-48,948;abdomen337-40.5, 940;forewing 322-24,925; hindwing 3 22-24,9 25.5.Postnodalcrossveins inforewing 3 11-14,9 13andhindwing 3 12-14,9 13. DISCUSSION Metaleptobasis lillianaeisknown only from centralBolivia. Thenearest relative, M. manicaria,isknownfromTrinidadandVenezuela.Thisspecies was foundinthe shadedand tangled forest marginof alargelake. OtherOdonatafoundnearby inthe shadewereAnatyajanuariaRis andLestesfalciferSjbstedt. Thedarkenedterminalabdominalsegmentswill distinguishM.lillianaemalesand femalesfromM.rmmicariaWilliamson, whichhavepaleterminalabdominalsegments. Thecerciare barelydecurved,notstrongly decurvedas inM.manicaria.Viewedlater- ally, thedorsalmarginofabdominalsegment 10ismoreelevatedandtrapezoidal than inM.manicaria.Thethoracichornsaremoredepressedanddirectedmorelaterally than theconspicuously elevated,anteriorly anddorsally directedhornsofM. manicaria. 198 J.J.
