He did his M.A. and Ph.D. in history at Michigan State University and the B.Sc. in economics at the University of Hull, England. In 1965 he qualified as a barrister-at-law at Gray’s Inn, London. He has taught at the University of Michigan-Flint, the Cipriani Labour College (Trinidad) and St. Mary’s College (Trinidad). He has been visiting professor at the University of Minnesota, Brandeis Uni­ versity and The Colorado College. He has authored and edited several books, including Literary Garve,y ism: Gar­ vey, Black Arts and the Harlem Renaissance The Pan- African Connection, Marcus Garvey, Hero and Race First: the Ideological and Organizational Struggles of Marcus Garvey and the Universal Negro Improvement Association.
