A beginning has been made to remedy this situation by the publication in translation of two of his books, on the Greek and the Latin church fathers, which are highly esteemed both by scholars and by the educatedlaity. Although the author expressly renounces *learned quotations, notes, explanations, marginal citations, footnotes, and appendages of that sort', the expert will recog- nize behind these biographical sketches a background of exact knowledge of the literary work of the church fathers, of their historical setting, and of their theological impact. As translator, and a former pupil of the author, well ac- quainted with his methodological and theological approach, I have endeavoured to preserve faithfully the spirit ofthis work, and the individuality of the author in it. I acknowledge my indebtedness to my colleagues and friends, Professor John Lawson of Atlanta and Dr. Jack H. Wilson of Athens, Ten- nessee, as well as to the Rev. L. A. Garrard of Oxford for his editorialwork. AboveallIowe thanks to theauthorhimselffor hisintellectualinspiration, and forhiswarminterestin my own work also. M. H. Emory University Atlanta, Georgia VI
