Kramer, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the School of Social Work at the Univer- sity of Wisconsin-Madison. She received her MSSW from the Raymond A, Kent School of Social Work at the University of Louisville, and her PhD in Social Welfare from the Uni- versity of Washington (Seattle). Her research efforts to date have enhanced understand- ing of three aspects of caregiving that have emerged as unique areas of inquiry: positive aspects of caregiving, transitions in caregiving, and men as caregivers. She is currently engaged in research on innovations and enhancements to end-of-life care. Her clinical experiences have been in multiple settings including hospitals, nursing homes, fami- ly practice clinics, and community-based social service agencies. She team teaches a course on Family Caregiving, and teaches other graduate social work courses on the topics of grief and loss, and gerontological social work practice. Edward Thompson, PhD, is a Professor of Sociology and Director of the Gerontology Studies Program at Holy Cross College. He received his BA in sociology from California State University, Sacramento, and his PhD in sociology in 1980 from Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland). He has long been inter- ested in issues of gender and family life, pub- lishes on men and masculinity, and teaches courses on the family, sociology of men, aging and society, sociology of mental health, and medical sociology. Dr. Thompson studies the social worlds of older men and has published on men's caregiving, religious experiences of older men, and later life masculinity. He edited the first collection of original articles examining older men (Older Men's Lives, 1994). He serves as the organizer of the men's issues interest group for the Gerontological Society of America, and enjoys working closely with students. Betty J. Kramer, PhD Edward H.
