MEMORIAL INSCRIPTIONS
In compiling this booklet of memorial inscriptions from
Barry Churchyard, thanks are extended to all members
and non members of the Tay Valley Family History
Society who helped in any way whatever, whether by
advising, recording or typing, lending photographs, or
preparing the text for publication.

The original church at Barry has long been
demolished, down to a few feet above the ground.

The ruin is completely surrounded by lairs.

The lairs are in lines on a north / south axis as is
the norm for a Scottish Kirkyard, making the
stones face east / west.

The stones are identified by one or two letters
followed by a 2 digit number.

The letter(s) identify the row, while the numbers
identify the stones counting southwards from the
north end of the row.

The single letter is used in the south west section,
while the two letters beginning E are for the south
east section.

The two letters the same are for the extension at
the northern half of the churchyard.

This method of identification is for this publication
only.

All dates used in this text are written in day
number, then months written in full, followed by
the years in four digits. eg 27 January 1944.

RAMSAY ROSE her daughter who died at Carnoustie 29 September
1849 aged 35 years and of HELEN ROSE who died at sea on the 27
August 1846 aged 34 and of the said Mrs ELIZABETH ROSE who
died 12 May 1857 aged 80 years

A02 1830 Erected to the memory of ROBERT PATON late
shoemaker in Carnoustie who died on the 13 November 1829 aged 56
years also his grandchild HELEN PATON who died the 24 June 1830
in the 3 year of her age also of his grandchild ROBERT PATON who
died the 19 September 1836 in the 6 year of his age also of his spouse
HELEN MILLN who died the 28 March 1839 in the 64 year of her
age also his daughter in law BARBARA PETRIE wife of CHARLES
PATON who died 29 April 1857 aged 59 years also his son
CHARLES PATON who died 21 May 1875 aged 72 years also
THOMAS BLACK son in law of the above CHARLES PATON who
died 18 August 1901 aged 74 years BARBARA PATON wife of the
above THOMAS BLACK who died 11 February 1910 aged 80 years
Enriching virtue clothed his soul With tender love and care For grief
worn pilgrims to console With fervent Christian prayer Assured of

Grange of Barry who died 7 February 1916 age 83 years also of
ELIZA LYALL SIMPSON his wife who died 4 November 1905 aged
74 years interred at Dundee Western Cemetery also of AGNES
FENTON MILNE their daughter who died 2 June 1915 aged 44 years

memory of her husband ROBERT PETRIE who died the 3
December 1807 in the 55 year of his age also of their son DAVID who
died the 22 December 1834 in the 40 year of his age MARGRET
ROBERTSON died 1 March 1839 in the 79 year of her age BETSY
RAMSAY wife of SAMUEL PETRIE died 9 October 1872 in the 69
year of her age SAMUAL PETRIE died on the 13 August 1873 aged
74 years We part to meet again

MARY the eldest daughter died 22 August 1917 aged 84 years his

May 1923 aged 87 years and is interred here

monument was erected by SUSAN PETRIE his widow and by
ISABEL MORAM their daughter the above SUSAN PETRIE died
13 February 1845 aged 58 years
