On behalfofthe Classof2000, the LOG staffwould like to dedicate thisyearbook, 2000 Steps Forward, OneLookBack,toMrs.VirginiaColbert.Weallknowherasthefriendly,outgoingsecretarytotheprincipal whoalwayshasasmileonherface.Sheisalwaysreadytolendahelpinghandtoallthestudentsandteachers ofMHS.Alongwiththe250seniors, Mrs. Colbertwillbe'graduating' withtheClassof2000,butinsteadof headingoffto college she will be retiring in order to spend more timewith herhusband Edward, herthree childrenandhersixgrandchildren. AftergraduatingfromEverettHighSchoolandMaidenBusinessSchool,Mrs.ColbertenteredtheMelrose PublicSchoolSystemin 1976asasecretaryattheLincolnElementarySchool. Latershewasre-locatedtothe MHSGuidanceofficewhereshefirstdiscoveredwhat itwasliketoworkwithhighschoolstudents. In 1995, Mrs. Colbertwastransferredtothefirst flooroffice asDr. Hayes' personal secretary. In 1999, Mrs. Colbert welcomed Dr. Burke, ournew principal and helped to make his transition to MHS a smooth one. After25 yearsofpositiveinfluence, dedicationandenthusiasmtowardsthestudentsofMelrose,Mrs. Colbertwillre- tire to spend time with her family. Shewill begreatly missed! THE OPENING ThroughoutouryearsatMelroseHigh,wehaveendifredmanychanges.Theyincludethe departure ofmany favorite veteran teachers and the arrival ofmany new unknown teach- ers, and also the arrival ofa new principal, Dr. Burke, with new rules and expectations. Eventhoughwemayhavebeenupsetbysomeofthesechanges, inthelongrunwecanlook back and realize that by coming here, we made the right decision. Being the first class to graduate from Melrose High in the newmillenniumwill alone put us in the history books, butwearesomuchmorethanthat. The Class of2000 is not only the first class to graduate from Melrose High in the 21st century, but it is one ofthe most cohesive yet diverse groups that Melrose High has ever seen. Academically we are among the brightest classes in school history. Athletically we have made the record books for both team and individual accomplishments. Our band, clubs,andorganizationshaveallmadeapositiveimpactnotonlyonourschool, butonour cityaswell. TheClassof2000hasmadeMelroseHighaplacetobeproudof! Wehavetaken manystepstoget tothispoint, but in ourliveswe have so many moreto take. Along the way we have learned so much and are grateful for all ofour experiences.
