Technology and advances in biomedical science allow us to practice sophisticated medi- cine using precision techniques and ever-evolving pharma- ceuticals to fight disease more successfully than our predecessors. We can cure more, comfort more, and offer more hope to those facing illness. In many ways, it is more satisfying to practice medicine now than ever before. Yet the physician workforce is increasingly burned out and frus- trated. Attrition, depression, and suicide are frequent topics of discussion at national meetings, in all specialties of medi- cine. Why now? As our profession focuses on the systems issues of medical practice in 2019 – the pros and cons of the electronic medical record, the debate over fee-for-service insurance plans, and how to accomplish the ever-increasing need and interest in access to timely care – our students need to learn skills that will allow them to work within this complicated system and still love the practice of medicine. It is a privilege to watch students grow from wide-eyed first-year students to seasoned house staff. It is clear that the energy, enthusiasm, and altruism common among our students are the bases for their strength as physicians. We hope that the suggestions and discussions within this book help students to build skills for a successful and happy life in medicine. New York, NY, USA Dana Zappetti New York, NY, USA Jonathan D.
