Whether it’s moving to a new place or welcoming a new dean, change is a part of our lives. Every day, MHS presents us with countless opportunities to generate change, reach our fullest potentials, and test new waters. Medfield invites us to explore un-traveled seas and find our own inspirations. It is a community open to change. This year, we embraced new faces in our administration, as well as an entirely new high school. We had to adjust to the change in environment, but we all jumped into the adventure together, eager to venture into the unknown. Keeping our heads above water, we helped each other learn to swim. Still, we as students would not have thrived without the teachers, coaches, and school staff who helped keep us afloat. At the end of the 2005-2006 school year, students will dip into new waters. Underclassmen will follow the changing tides into their next year at MHS. Seniors will ride the waves into unknown oceans far and wide. And for every span of water each senior encounters, there lies an ocean of possibilities. Although it is hard to imagine living anywhere but our high school environment, the staff, the Medfield community, and our friends and families have prepared every senior for these new places. Thanks to them, we have realized the endless potential in ourselves. The seas may be choppy at times, but smooth sailing is always just around the comer. There is unlimited room for all Medfield High School students’ ambitions in the infinite Ocean of Possibilities we swim in. Not only is the Medfield High School developing in size and scope of opportunities, but also the town continues to flourish in many new ways. The once small and sheltered “pond” known as Medfield has burgeoned into a diverse and dynamic “ocean." Involved administrators and concerned citizens work together to create new programs to educate, entertain and involve the public. Continuing education programs, dance studios, intramural sports, theater, music, the arts and senior center events are only a few of the activities that bring folks together. In addition to drawing new residents to Medfield. these opportunities strengthen the bonds of the community and reflect a sense of dedication. This year, a remarkable experience broadcasted on television exemplified the wonders of giving back to a community, something Medfield has excelled in for years. On the show' Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, hundreds of generous friends and neighbors united during the reconstruction of a Medfield home. The family faced a number of struggles and their situation began to resemble a sandbar on which they were grounded. The actual creation of the Johnson's house only took seven days due to the large number of ready volunteers and heartfelt desire to improve the lives of a deserving family. As students, and the “future generation," learn¬ ing the importance of charity, contribution and commitment is a lesson that will be ingrained in our minds forever; the opportunity provided by Extreme Makeover: Home Edition taught this life lesson in a very tangible way. In addition to Medfield's times of celebration, the townspeople have unfortunately endured heartbreak as well. The death or Eric Perkins in 2004 was a tidal wave from which many thought they could never recover. However, a tremendous amount of dedication and heal¬ ing was reflected during the 2005 flag football tournament for the Eric Perkins Scholarship. Current senior. Sheila Gill organized the tournament with recent graduate Brad Garnett. The intentions of the organizers were to honor the memory of Eric in a communal and competitive way through the use of Eric’s favorite sport. It was important to all concerned not to glamorize the event or create media hype. Not only were all goals met. but exceeded, especially in the number of participants and amount of scholarship money raised. In addition, the community was able to join together in a positive way and create a new Medfield tradition. Yet again, such opportunities bind the community together, allowing all involved to grow. Early in the morning, the beach can often be found in aflawless condition. Untouched sand, calm waters and the aroma of sea salt fills the air. The very first person to stroll, run or cavort on this carpet of crystals will leave footprints, which will only last until the tides wash them away. As the day progresses, more footprints are molded in the sand only to be erased by the cool, blue water. The idea of tracking another’s prints exactly would be impossible; following another's path is more realistic. Just like footprints in the sand. Medfield's events and memories cannot be recreated. The happenings, opportunities and relationships forged during this past year can never be experienced in the same way again, but future generations can follow our lead and create meaningful memories of their own by initiating opportunities for all. * * * .«
