Jasper, Tennessee Chief John Ross In the center of the sleepy little town of Jasper, Tennessee, stands a building that is a part of the town’s history. The building is the Olive Branch Lodge, Number 279, F. & A.M. Olive Branch’s history runs very deep. Olive Branch Lodge is the oldest public building in Marion County. The building was constructed by Alfred White, a black slave. It was completed in the 1850’s. In the 1860’s the building was used as a hospital for both the North and South. After the Civil War, it served as the Sam Houston Academy until 1922. The Grand Lodge of the State of Tennessee issued a Charter Under Dispensation in 1824. The Grand Master at the time was Andrew Jackson, the first Grand Master to be elected from the floor. We have had one other Grand Master elected from the floor since then, a doctor from Chattanooga, Gus Vlasis, M.D. Chief John Ross of the Cherokee Tribe was one of the original thirty-eight charter members. Olive Branch Lodge is still very active today. TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: Hello there and Good Day! My name is Stacey McDaniel and I am a private duty nurse for one of your patients from Cleveland, Tennessee. I had the privilege to accompany Chandler Christenson to a recent visit to the Shriners Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky. I was taken aback at all of the wonderful things that I got to experience. It was the first time that I had ever gotten to go to Shriners Hospital and see the facility. I was so blessed by everything that I got to witness from the time I was transported on a shuttle bus to the time I got to actively engage with all the participant’s affiliated with the hospital. I was in awe at the care and compassion that was so easily expressed from the drivers to the doctors. Everyone was so happy and honestly glad to be where they were that it reflected in the care and attitude that was presented to each person that was there (including me). I grew up knowing about the Shriners Hospitals, but I lacked the knowledge on just how it functioned and the contributions that it made to the community. I never realized myself just how much of an impact that this organization made on those in need of help and the families that benefited from the financial and emotional sides of the spectrum. Being from another medical company, I was a little apprehensive about at the hospital. I wasn’t sure just how I would be accepted in the decisions of our shared patient. I was amazed again! Everyone smiled and talked with me without shunning or prejudice. I felt at ease and appreciated for my views that were considered in relationship to our patient. It made me feel proud to be a nurse and honored to be a part of a joint venture to improve the life of a patient and his family. I wanted to send you a letter to express my deepest thanks and appreciation for such a life altering expression of God’s love being lived out in action through wonderful and loving individuals as yourselves. I praise God for the opportunity that he allowed me to see and be a part of this trip. I look forward to future trips to come and the overwhelming feeling of joy that has entered my heart from all the people that God has allowed to cross my path with this abundantly loving organization! May God continue to bless you and keep you in the days to come. With Deepest Sincerity, Stacey M. Thanks to the Bus Unit, Tin Lizzies and O’Possum Creek Shrine Club for sending three kids to Camp Ability this summer. Alhambra Legion of Honor We are past the rough days of winter, except the Dogwood weather we are now enjoying, and the sunshine is great. It makes you want to get out and enjoy the weather. Our member Jack Davis loves to walk around his neighborhood. But recently he tried to get out of the way of a car that was coming too close and fell. As you can guess, Jack was sore for some time. We are glad to report that Jack is now doing better. Also, Charles Watson has not been feeling well and we hope that he feels better soon. It seems that shingles is really hitting our unit hard. Harvey Helton has had a really bad case and he is ready to see it go so that he can get out again. Al and Lois Janney enjoyed a visit from their son and his family who live in California. They took a few days off with another son and toured Gulf Shores, Alabama. I know they have had a good time. Humor Time – While visiting my grandchild, I took a coin from my purse and handed it to her. “What do you say?” her parents urged. The 2 year-old piped up, “Got any more?”. Let us continue to support our troops in harms way and pray for their safe return home. Melvin R. Woolsey
