Mathematical models for the growth of human popu- CHOICE eS lations. Cambridge, 1973. 186p il tab 72-91957. 17.50. — Sociology & Anthropology ISBN 0-521-20111-X co An excellent introduction to the study of deterministic and probabilistic \ mathematical models of growth and change in human populations. Pollard, who is an active researcher inthis field, draws together the theoretical analyses of the models and the practical problems and tech- niques necessary to test and improve them. He presents a variety of models that vary in complexity and span a time period from Malthus to the late 1960s. The emphasis is on stochastic models, and the reader is expected to be acquainted with the results of calculus, matrix theory, and elementary probability and statistics. Asa text, it will probably be used in graduate demography courses, but it should seriously be con- sidered for undergraduate senior seminars. The mathematics is clearly presented and the analytical arguments flow freely. Each model is pre- sented with interesting historical comments about its development, and there is an ample number of exercises for which solutions are provided. Highly recommended for all college and university libraries. 784 Mathematical models for the growth of human populations Mathematical models for the growth of human populations J.H.POLLARD MACQUARIE UNIVERSITY, SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA CAMBRIDGE AT THE UNIVERSITY PRESS 1973 WABBXBBBWEBDEneenueeEED LIBRARY iMAY 16 1975 UNIVERSITY OF THE PACIFIC macesBBuuuuaens BAARBWBAWRBBIBWDeBIaeSenSxu raeaesaseva pwrmraaarestExietes Published by the Syndics of the Cambridge University Press Bentley House, 200 Euston Road, London nwi 2pB American Branch: 32 East 57th Street, New York, N.y.10022 © Cambridge University Press 1973 Library of Congress Catalogue Card Number: 72-91957 ISBN: 0 521 20111 X Printed in Great Britain at the University Printing House, Cambridge (Brooke Crutchley, University Printer) To my mother and my father we 2 a - os a = — ree 7 . a Rhetiueeads 9”) She a,ea r Wa me Oe Pin LPi Oin-~p Atlerae as: t GeTert a ; es hs oo .
