The first part is comprised of lengthy testaments which are contain_ed in the Georgian manuscripts copied in various monasteries in the western neighbourhood of Antioch-on-the-Orontes. The second part offers excerpts from the Bios of Giorgi At'oneli (George the Athonite) and excerpts from an original work of Ep'rem Mcire (Ephrem the Small): "Report on the Conversion of Georgians and Books in which this is Mentioned". The third and fourth parts deal with the chronicles and historical sources pertinent to Georgian monastic establishments in the western outskirts of Antioch before the thirteenth century. The manuscripts containing the testaments are closely related not only in origin (most of them having been copied in the monasteries of the Black Mountains) but also chronologically. They extend from the very beginning of the eleventh to the beginning of the thirteenth century. One of the last manuscripts (Gospels H-1791) was copied in 1213­ 1216. This fact complements the historical documents and archaeolog­ ical evidence which indicate the existence of unbearable circumstances in this region already before the invasion of the Mameluks. The sack of Antioch by Bibars in 1268 and its horrendous consequences appear S lr. ({ ~ to have dealt an irreparable blow toward the final eradication of the z monastic life in this region when surviving groups of monks abandoned 3 1 their monasteries and sought refuge elsewhere, mainly in the well­ protected monastery in Athos, which now harbors books brought by fleeing monks from Antioch. Although some of the short excerpts of these testaments are known through various catalogues, this is the first time that all known Georg­ ian testaments of the manuscripts copied in the Antiochean area ISBN 2801700312 appear in their entirety. Excluded are small portions of dogmatic © 1976 by Corpus Scriptorum Christianorum Orientalium. theological treatises which do not have any direct bearing on my study.
