This book reflects the recent changes to the TOEFL Ibt that came into effect August of 2019. Introduction Welcome to House of TOEFL’s book on the Reading section. I’m glad you’re here. It means you’re serious about getting a good score on the TOEFL and you’re ready to work. I would like to introduce myself. My name is Kathy and I am a TOEFL teacher who has been teaching TOEFL since 2010. I’ve written tests for TOEFL books and helped hundreds of students reach their goals. A lot of TOEFL books offer tips and suggestions and different ways of approaching questions. What makes this book different? Well, I’ve combined my knowledge from many sources and years of experience and have put it all into one easy-to-read book! Not only that, but I’m going to tell you about the traps used on the TOEFL—traps that are not mentioned in most TOEFL preparation books. You will get LOTS of practice as you read. This will leave you much better prepared to tackle the Reading section. This book assumes you already have basic knowledge of the TOEFL, such as how to register, what I.D. to bring to the test site, and so on. I won’t bore you with all that information. You can find the most up-to-date information on those topics at www.ets.org/toefl. The purpose of this book is to teach you strategies on how to answer each question type that are straightforward, direct, and simple. With these strategies, you will be prepared and confident to take the Reading section. The TOEFL is a costly, stressful test. I want to help you get your goal score so you can move on with your life. So let’s talk TOEFL. The TOEFL Reading section has 3 or 4 reading passages. If you have three reading passages, you will have fifty-four minutes to complete the reading section. If you have four, you have seventy-two minutes. You’re given this time limit in TOTAL—which means if you’re done one passage quickly, you have more time for the next passage. As you can see, this divides up to eighteen minutes per passage. You must be very careful not to go over the 18 minutes. Please note that you have 108 seconds per question on the new format. Note: Reading passages are approximately 700 words. The most common mistake students make is that they take too much time on the first and second reading passages and do not have enough time to finish the third (or fourth!) Obviously, this impacts their score in a big way! Now, if you’re given four reading passages, there is good news and bad news. The bad news is that they are not going to score one of those passages. They’re putting it on the test to try out new testing material. The good news is that if you have a longer reading section, you will have a shorter listening section. One more word of caution: if you get four reading passages, do not try to guess which reading passage will not be scored. Do your best on all four. The unscored passage may be any of them- the ETS selects the order of the reading passages randomly. Each reading passage has nine or ten questions. You will have nine questions if the final question is a chart question. You will have ten questions if the final question is a summary question. Summary questions are more common. If you do not know the question types I am referring to yet, don’t worry- this book reviews them all. Most questions are worth one point. The summary question at the end is worth 2 points, and chart questions are worth 3 points. If any question is worth more than one point, it will be indicated in the directions. READ ALL DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY. The best score you can get on the reading section is 30. One thing that is very important for you to understand before you take the TOEFL: a lot of students worry that they aren’t experts or don’t have degrees in the subjects on the test. These subjects can range from psychology, history, art, archaeology, astronomy, biology, biographies, and so on. But this is a language test, and only a language test. As such, all the information you need to answer the questions will be given to you in the passage. There is another thing to keep in mind about the subjects of the reading passages. Some students say that they are not interested in certain topics, or that they are better at topics closely related to their field of study. Please note that the topics of the passages should not matter to you. Do your best, no matter what. Focus on attacking the questions, not the subject matter of the passage. Even if you have no interest in the subject, treat it like a puzzle you need to solve. In the Reading section, you can go back to previous questions. You can’t do that in the other sections of the TOEFL. However, I believe that you should not go back unless you see new information that makes you realize you got a previous question wrong. Students who second guess themselves often choose the correct answer first and then change their answer to an incorrect answer. Only change an answer if you are sure you got it wrong the first time. If you’re sure you made a mistake, click on the REVIEW button at the top of the screen. This will allow you to see the questions you have answered and go back to any question by clicking on it. Managing Your Time You have probably already done the math in your head and realized eighteen minutes per reading passage is not a long time. You’re correct about that! I’ll tell you something that might surprise you: I do not want you to read the passage before you start the questions. Only read the title of the passage so you know what it’s about, and go immediately to the first question. You will end up realizing you did read the entire passage by the time you finish (or almost the entire passage.) But what I do not want you to do is waste time reading the passage carefully while the clock is ticking before you start answering questions. You do not have time to do this! Go straight to the questions. You have to scroll to the end of the passage and back up before you can see the first question—that’s fine—do it. The TOEFL is not designed to see if you have digested all the information and have learned the information for the future—it is designed to see if you can answer questions quickly and accurately. During the TOEFL reading test, you will see a clock in the top right-hand corner. Make sure to keep an eye on the time! Be aware of how much time you have left. Notice that you do have the option to hide the timer by clicking “Hide Time.” I do not recommend this. Below, you can see what a TOEFL reading passage looks like. I do not recommend using the HELP button. This will only give you technical help. The HELP feature does NOT provide hints or tips. You may use BACK to go to the previous question, and NEXT to go to the next question. The REVIEW feature will allow you to review your answers. This will be helpful if there is a particular question you wish to return to, but it is several questions back. The REVIEW button will allow you to return quickly to that question. THROUGHOUT THE READING SECTION, ALWAYS: READ THE FULL QUESTION READ THE FULL ANSWER CHOICES
